Defining icons in the project

Required user role: ADMIN

Creating icons is optional. Wherever you choose an icon in the project settings, you can use one of the built-in Material Icons (by name, optionally with a colour) or a custom SVG icon from the Icons tab.

Custom icons can be used for:

  • buckets (the Icon field, see Buckets),
  • enum items (the Icon field, see Enums).

Adding icons

  1. Open Settings → Icons.
  2. Click Load from file and select one or more SVG files.
  3. Each file becomes an icon named after the file (without .svg). You can rename it later by editing the row.

When some files can't be added, a message lists them with the reason, e.g. logo.svg: It isn't an SVG file.

Any size. An icon can have any size or viewBox (e.g. 16×16, 24×24, 512×512): it is scaled to the size of the place it is shown in. SVG files exported from Inkscape or Illustrator and icons from icon sets (Material, Font Awesome, Bootstrap, Lucide…) can be used as they are.

Colour. Icons are drawn in the current theme colour, or in the colour selected for the bucket or enum item. A single colour set on the whole icon in the file (e.g. fill="#5f6368") is removed, so that the icon takes the theme colour like the built-in icons. Outlined icons (fill="none" stroke="currentColor") keep their outlines. Colours of parts inside the icon stay, so multi-coloured icons keep their colours, also those an editor such as Adobe Illustrator keeps as classes in a <style> (.st0{fill:#E30613}): they are written to the shapes when the file is loaded. Icons built of a <symbol> and <use> (common in icon sets) work too.

Limits. An icon may only draw a picture: scripts, links, styles, embedded or external images, foreign content and references to external resources are removed when the file is loaded, and refused when an icon is saved through the API. An icon can have at most 32 KB.

Icon fields:

  • Image - preview of the icon
  • Name - icon name (3-200 characters)
  • Created by - creator name
  • Created at - creation date and time
  • Modified by - last modifier
  • Modified at - last modification date and time

A bucket or an enum item keeps its own copy of the selected icon, so changing or removing an icon in this tab doesn't change the buckets and enum items that already use it.

The icons of a project are part of its exported dataset (see Project management).
