Replaces #21 (rebuilt on current main, since its branch is 76 commits behind and lives on a fork).

What and why

Ionic and Capacitor apps run the regular overlay in a WebView on a phone, but they couldn't reach the devtools server on the developer's machine, and nothing showed what Capacitor itself was doing. This adds:

Connecting a device

  • @pangular-inspector/devtools/overlay-manual: starts nothing on import and never adds the floating button. initOverlay({ baseURL, connectionMeta, authToken }) connects without fetching __connection.json, which a phone can't do cross-origin. /overlay behaves as before.
  • When CapacitorHttp has patched fetch, the SSE stream uses CapacitorWebFetch.
  • A baseURL list together with connectionMeta is refused, and a missing configs gets a warning.
  • Clear console messages when a device can't connect (mixed content, cleartext, a refused token).
  • Pairing tokens: auth: { tokens } on the Express hub and the Vite plugin, and --auth-token / PANGULAR_AUTH_TOKEN on the CLI, so a phone can skip the one-time code. Off by default, ignored with --no-auth, and never printed or sent to pages.
  • Vite allowLan (opt-in): answers a non-loopback request only when its origin is in allowedOrigins and auth is on. The default stays loopback-only. capacitor://localhost can now be listed.
  • CLI: --allowed-origin, plus a dev-only initOverlay(...) snippet printed when it listens on the network.

Capacitor tab (inspector capacitor, on by default)

  • The tab uses the Capacitor logo, and the hub has its own Capacitor dock entry.
  • Summary strip: platform, calls, failed, slow, pending, CapacitorHttp and plugin hints. The counts filter the call list.
  • Environment: platform, native or web, server URL, CapacitorHttp state.
  • Plugin calls: status with an icon and text, a duration bar, "Not implemented" for UNIMPLEMENTED, and the age of pending calls. Startup calls are captured by an early capacitor-hook entry.
  • Call details: Arguments, Result or Error and Timing tabs, with Copy as JSON and Copy as code (masked values only).
  • Plugins: availability, whether the app imported them, and npx cap sync <platform> with a copy button when something is missing. Plugins Capacitor registers itself get no hint.
  • Listeners with event counts, the masked last event, and a warning when one event has more than one active listener.
  • Plugin state cards built only from results and events the app already received. The first is for Foldable (@erkamyaman/capacitor-foldable): fold state, posture, hinge, active display and size class.
  • Agent tools list-capacitor-calls and list-capacitor-plugins. list-pages labels a device page Capacitor (android|ios).
  • Redaction on the page and again on the server, including string JSON and form bodies and Preferences {key, value} pairs.

Docs

  • A Capacitor guide led by live reload, with a "which setup do I need" table and troubleshooting.
  • A Capacitor inspector page, plus updates to the tools, configuration, security, CLI, Vite, Express, overlay and installation pages and the glossary.
  • The NativeScript and Angular Native guides' --host <IP> advice is corrected.

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check (38 commits)
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools (1747) and pnpm test:panel (404); new tests fail without their change
  • pnpm skills:check
  • Docs updated, pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build, extension/ui committed with no diff
  • Checked in the browser with axe: scripts/panel-axe.mjs 36 views, including the Foldable card, the leak warning, the Error tab and the Slow filter, dark and light, 1280 and 360px

Also:

  • 11 independent reviews: overlay, security, the hook against real @capacitor/core 6, 7 and 8, tests, an emulated Android run end to end, regressions against main, UI and a11y, docs accuracy, a new user following the guide, edge cases, and agent tools. All findings were fixed, followed by a second pass on redaction, security and the hook.
  • Emulated Android run: app at https://localhost in mobile Chromium with the real native-bridge.js and a fake native layer, against the CLI and the hub over a network address. Covered connection, the code prompt, the token, the Capacitor tab, startup calls, agent tools, and highlight on the page.
  • No regressions against main: existing tabs, the Vite plugin default, the CLI, and idle cost on non-Capacitor pages.

Device testing

First run, on an Android 16 emulator and an iOS simulator with Capacitor 8.5.3:

  • Android bundled build over adb reverse with the CLI: connected, native code prompt, Capacitor (android) label, calls, redaction, CapacitorHttp detection off and on, agent tools, and no overlay in a production build.
  • iOS simulator: reached the server from capacitor://localhost without an ATS change and showed the native code prompt.
  • Fixed from that run: the WebView plugin note, over-masked Access-Control-* headers, and three guide gaps.

Second run, on an Android 16 Pixel Fold emulator: pairing token (connects without the prompt, only a fingerprint in the server output), CapacitorHttp off and on, CORS header values kept with the body still masked, no WebView note, call detail tabs, the Foldable card following foldStateChange when the emulator folds, the listener leak warning, and inspect-component and highlight through MCP.

  • Found: Android needs server.cleartext even for localhost over adb reverse, and a failed connection makes the WebView console print the connection URL with the pairing token. The browser prints that URL itself, so the guide, overlay and security pages now say both.

Still to run on real phones before merging: Wi-Fi and USB, the iOS code entry, backgrounding, two devices, and allowMixedContent on its own.

Notes for reviewers

  • Pairing tokens rely on devframe registering its auth handshake only when one isn't already registered. If that changes, the hub warns and falls back to the one-time code.
  • Plugin calls answered by a plugin's web implementation are seen only when capacitor-hook loads before @capacitor/core, as the guide sets it up. Otherwise only native calls show, and the tab says so.
  • The Vite plugin still doesn't cover an Android phone over Wi-Fi in a bundled build, because https://localhost isn't a network origin for allowLan. The guide points to the CLI or the Express hub for that case.

A page on another origin than the devtools server, such as an app in a Capacitor WebView, cannot read __connection.json, and the overlay entry starts a connection and the floating button on import that can only fail there.

Add @pangular-inspector/devtools/overlay-manual, which exports the same API and starts nothing until initOverlay() is called, and never adds the button. The auto-start moves to overlay-auto.ts, which the overlay export now points at, so its behaviour and its published dist/overlay.mjs stay the same. initOverlay() takes connectionMeta, the content of __connection.json, so devframe skips that fetch.
Capacitor apps can now report through overlay-manual, so the Capacitor dock drops its Coming Soon title and placeholder. The view lists the setup steps and links to the Capacitor guide, like the NativeScript dock. The unused author card of the coming soon page goes with it.
Walk an Ionic or Capacitor app through overlay-manual and connectionMeta for the standalone CLI, the Express hub and the Vite plugin, with the address for each device, the Android and iOS development settings, listening on the network and the one-time code. List Capacitor with the supported platforms on the home page and in the README.
…E past CapacitorHttp

With connectionMeta, devframe resolves the server's paths against the first base URL only, so initOverlay now rejects a list or a missing baseURL instead of cutting it down quietly. It warns once when connectionMeta has no configs, since the page then runs the default inspectors and redaction.

When CapacitorHttp patches fetch, the native layer can't stream server-sent events, so the SSE channel uses the browser fetch the bridge keeps as window.CapacitorWebFetch.
Live reload loads the app from the dev server, so an app whose dev server mounts the devtools needs no manual start. The guide now opens with a table of which setup each server and device needs, covers live reload on localhost and over Wi-Fi, keeps the bundled build with overlay-manual as the fallback, and adds the one-time code on a device, CapacitorHttp, the Capacitor config keys and troubleshooting.
Add a capacitor inspector. The overlay wraps Capacitor.nativePromise and nativeCallback, which the plugin proxies of @capacitor/core 6 to 8 look up on every call, so it logs native calls with their arguments, outcome and duration, and counts listener events, without changing what the app gets. The new capacitor-hook entry starts the same log before @capacitor/core loads: it keeps startup calls in a capped buffer and wraps registerPlugin, so calls a web implementation answers are logged too.

Values go through serialize() on the page and again on the server, the value next to a secret key and CapacitorHttp URLs are masked, and the overlay's own requests stay out of the log. Pages push only what changed, carry a pageId and expire. Two agent tools, list-capacitor-calls and list-capacitor-plugins, read the data, and inspectors.capacitor and limits.capacitorCalls configure it.
The panel shows a Capacitor app's environment, its plugin calls with their outcome and details, its plugins with hints when an import and the native project disagree, and its listeners. The tab appears while a Capacitor app reports, and the Capacitor dock keeps the setup steps as its empty state. Turning the inspector off hides the dock.
Add the Capacitor inspector page, with what it shows, where the data comes from, the capacitor-hook entry for web and startup calls, redaction and limits. List the two agent tools, the inspectors.capacitor key and limits.capacitorCalls, the new entry point, and the plugin call and Capacitor hook terms.
A phone app can't open the magic link, and typing the code on it is awkward. initPangularHub takes auth: {tokens}, keeps the one-time code on, and trusts a client that sends one of the tokens. The devframe registers devframe's own handshake from createInteractiveAuth with clientAuthTokens before the RPC core registers the default one, so the code exchange, the banner and revoke stay the same. Tokens shorter than 16 characters are ignored, are never printed whole, and stay out of the published config. initOverlay takes the token as authToken.
The plugin only answers requests from this machine, so a phone on Wi-Fi under live reload could not reach the devtools. allowLan opts in: a request from another machine passes only when its origin, or for a same-origin request its Host, is listed in allowedOrigins, and only while the one-time code is on. With auth: false the plugin ignores allowLan and warns. The default stays loopback only. The plugin also takes pairing tokens as auth: {tokens}.
… CLI

pangular dev now starts the dev server itself, so it can pass --allowed-origin (or allowedOrigins in the config file) to devframe, which createCac did not forward. --auth-token and PANGULAR_AUTH_TOKEN add pairing tokens. When the server listens on the network, the startup output lists the network URLs and an initOverlay() call with the server's whole connection info, config included. Tokens are only shown by their first characters.
Add pairing tokens to Access and redaction and to the hub, Vite and overlay pages, the allowLan option with its risk, the CLI's --allowed-origin, --auth-token and startup snippet, and update the Capacitor guide so every server has a path for a phone on Wi-Fi.
…rver too

String arguments and results were only checked for tokens, so a JSON or form body such as a CapacitorHttp login request, or JSON stored in Preferences, kept its passwords. Strings are now masked like HTTP bodies before they are cut. The server re-applies the {key, value} rule with its own redaction.secretNames, which also covers calls the early hook logged before the page knew the config, and it redacts the page URL and title. The inspector page now says that only the {key, value} shape is recognised.
With --no-auth the CLI registered the token handshake over devframe's trust-everyone one, which locked every client out, so it now ignores the tokens and says why. Tokens are shown as a short hash instead of their first characters, empty or non-string tokens (such as an unset environment variable) are reported, tokens only reach the dev server, and allowLan turns on only for true. The docs say the token travels in the connection URL and stays in the page's localStorage. A CLI test asserted after restoring its spy, so it could not fail; it now reads the calls first.
…uthfully

The collector observed each plugin promise with a rejection handler, which marked the app's own rejection as handled, so an app that left one unhandled no longer saw an unhandledrejection. It now hands the app a derived promise that settles the same way and keeps own properties such as remove.

CapacitorHttp showed as on for every native app, since the bridge always keeps CapacitorWebFetch; it is now read the way the bridge reads it, and is unknown elsewhere. Imported is unknown on native without the early hook, which records what passes through registerPlugin, and core's own plugins get no npx cap sync hint. removeAllListeners marks the plugin's listeners removed, an unhandled not implemented error is logged once and never for then, wrapped functions keep their name and toString, and the hook claims web calls only after core registered through it.
The collector ran on every page. It now starts only when window.Capacitor or the early hook is there, checks a few times at limits.refreshMs and then stops, pauses while the tab is hidden, and sends forget-capacitor-page only after a push went out. Its timers and pushes run outside Angular's zone. A failed push backs off exponentially instead of resending on every change, and pushing stops when the server has no push-capacitor function. The server patches only the page and calls a push carries into the shared state, instead of replacing every page.
…em short

Without a page argument the Capacitor tools pick the most recent page with a native bridge and name the other pages. Answers are capped with a narrowing hint, a plugin lists at most 20 methods, slowMs counts pending calls, and list-pages labels Capacitor pages. Timeout and no-app messages mention device apps and both overlay entries.
The Capacitor tab keeps the picked page while others report and lists pages in the order they first showed up, falling back to the device page. The live region speaks only on filter changes, arrow keys move through calls, unknown states read Unknown, core plugins get no sync hint, and the setup steps no longer flash before the state loads. The axe run now checks a populated tab.
…connections

The CLI prints the snippet in the guide's shape after the other startup lines, with a time limit on its fetch. connectionMeta takes an imported __connection.json, the no-server error and new one-time warnings point device apps at mixed content, cleartext and refused tokens, and the Vite plugin accepts capacitor://localhost from allowedOrigins.
…token tests

The panel test checks the dropped calls note, the pairing token tests reset their environment and wait less for refused clients, and the Capacitor tests lose their unused imports.
The Capacitor guide covers Angular's allowed hosts under SSR, installing the package for a bundled build, iOS devices on the network, --forwardPorts, a narrower config sample and blocked requests in troubleshooting. The token sample builds in every clone, the polyfills sample says to copy the base list, and the native guides open the panel where the server listens.

222-222: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Do not treat every page with window.Capacitor as a device page in noServerError.

manual is true when globalThis.Capacitor exists, even if the caller passed no connectionMeta. One example is the auto entry running in a Capacitor web build served by the dev server. In that case the error drops the mount-path and SETUP_URL guidance and shows only device and network guidance. Line 222 only selects message text, so this is a small diagnostics gap. Consider showing both hints when connectionMeta is absent and Capacitor exists.

…state

The capacitor shared state is now created with patches on, and calls are keyed by id, so a push adds one entry and drops the oldest without rewriting the list. A push at the call limit broadcasts about 0.5 KB instead of about 130 KB with three pages. The panel reads the keyed calls, and waits for a real server value before it shows the setup steps.
The CapacitorHttp prompt is sent only when window.webkit.messageHandlers.bridge exists, the same check @capacitor/core uses for iOS, so a custom platform named ios in a desktop browser opens no dialog and reports the state as unknown.
…TEXT

The Inspector entry lists capacitor, and the Platform entry says how list-pages labels Capacitor pages with and without a native bridge.
A same-origin request from another machine now has its Host read as an origin, so Host 192.168.1.20:80 matches an http://192.168.1.20 entry. Only a plain host or IP with a port is read, so another host, port or a malformed header is still refused.
… hints

When no devtools server answers in a Capacitor WebView and no connectionMeta was passed, the error keeps the dev server hints for live reload and adds the device and network ones.
Pairing tokens are read when the server starts and trust only the connection that sent them, so rotating one means a restart and a rebuild of the app, since the authToken option wins over the stored copy.

🟡 Minor · Reject Capacitor updates for pages owned by another RPC session. · devframe.ts:507-550

packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts:507-550
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject Capacitor updates for pages owned by another RPC session.

trackPageSessions.bind() overwrites the existing owner for a pageId, and unbind() removes the owner without checking the current session. A connected session can therefore send a valid push-capacitor report or forget-capacitor-page request for another session's pageId. A full report replaces that page's metadata and calls. A partial report merges into its state. A forget request deletes the page. Preserve multi-page reporting within one session, but reject updates and forget requests from other sessions.

Access-Control-Allow-Credentials and the other Access-Control headers hold origins, methods and true, never a secret, but their names matched the secret words, so a device test showed them as [redacted]. Their values are now kept, still passed through the token and JWT masking, unless redaction.mask lists them.
…tself

On a real Android build WebView is installed natively and never imported by the app, so the Plugins table and list-capacitor-plugins told the developer it was not imported. Plugins that @capacitor/core registers itself now get no note, as the docs say.
The tab used a generic phone icon. It now shows the Capacitor mark, filled in the tab colour, like the brand icons other framework tabs use.
… the Capacitor guide

A first device run hit three gaps: npx cap add fails without @capacitor/android or @capacitor/ios, ionic start makes an NgModule app that bootstraps with bootstrapModule, and the bundled build sample needs adb reverse on an emulator or USB phone.
A listener only reported how many events it received, so the panel and
agents could not see the state an event carried (a fold state, a network
status). Keep the payload of the last event per listener, masked like a
call result with small limits when a push reads it, and mask it again on
the server. list-capacitor-calls prints it next to each active listener.

…citor tab

The tab listed calls and tables, but a developer had to read every row to
see what went wrong. Add a summary strip whose counts filter the calls,
status icons and duration bars in the call list, a tabbed call detail
with Copy as JSON and Copy as code (masked values only), the exact
npx cap sync command per platform, the last event of each listener with
a warning for duplicate listeners, and plugin state cards that read
recorded results and events, starting with Foldable. The call list keeps
one tab stop, and only the strip is a live region.
Describe the summary strip and its filters, the call detail tabs and the
two copy buttons, the per platform sync command, the last event of each
listener with the possible leak warning, and the Foldable plugin state
card. Update the list-capacitor-calls answer and use
@erkamyaman/capacitor-foldable as the third-party plugin example in the
setup guide.
…mits

The kept Access-Control header values were put back after maskedValue applied its key and size limits, so a response with many such headers could store more than the limits allow. The headers now go through maskedValue with the rest, and only the CORS values that made it through are restored, cut at 200 characters.

🟡 Minor · Serialize page removal with any in-flight push. · capacitor-overlay.ts:201-227

packages/devtools/src/capacitor-overlay.ts:201-227
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Serialize page removal with any in-flight push.

pagehide calls capacitor.leave(), which can send forget-capacitor-page while push() is still awaiting my.rpc.call('push-capacitor', report). A late full report then recreates the page because mergeCapacitorReport() accepts full reports without a held page. The host publishes that page. Partial reports do not recreate it, but full retries do.

Defer the forget until an in-flight push finishes. Send it immediately when no push is active. Remove the acknowledgement-only sent guard.

…its way

A page hidden before its first push landed sent no forget, because the server had not answered yet, so the page stayed in the panel until it expired. Leaving during a push now forgets the page once that push lands, and resume cancels it.

Comment thread packages/devtools/src/capacitor-overlay.ts
Separate RPC calls may reach the server out of order. A page restored from the back-forward cache could push before the forget it sent on leaving had landed, and the late forget then dropped the page it had just reported. A push now waits for that forget first.
… can print a token

A Pixel Fold emulator run showed a bundled build fails with ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED even over adb reverse, so the guide now says server.cleartext is required. A failed connection also makes the WebView console print the whole connection URL with the pairing token, which the overlay and security pages now warn about.
