feat(mobile): narrow composers open the card on tap - #23986
Since #23570, the one-row composer shows only the provider icon, so you can't see the model or reasoning level until a draft wraps into the card. On phones the row really has no room. On iPad and the unfolded Duo it does, but the label is hidden anyway.
Fix
The composer now picks its layout from the row's width, with no device checks:
Card opens with the model and reasoning level (was a row with the icon)
Stays a row with the label
Typing
Card
Card opens as the draft reaches the label; the label stays full size
Keyboard closes
A text-only draft goes back to the row
Row, unless the draft is too long for it
With an image
Card
Thumbnail in the row, label shows only the provider icon
Also:
Opening and closing the card animates: the draft slides between the row and the card, and on narrow rows the model name slides out of the icon.
The card stays open while the model sheet is up.
Resizing the row while the card is open (rotating, folding or unfolding the Duo) re-measures, so the composer never gets stuck as a card.
In an empty thread, "No conversation yet" stays put when the card opens instead of jumping up.
Evidence
Before is main, after is this PR. iOS 27 simulators, dark theme, Claude Opus 5.5 / Extra High. The placeholder and the dictation mic were set only for the captures.
Cap.2026-10-25.at.18.44.58.mp4
Empty thread, before and after (Android emulator):
Android: Back and the back gesture hide the keyboard without unfocusing the text box, so on Android the card also requires the keyboard to be showing. It listens to the keyboard's will-hide event, so the card closes together with the keyboard.
Wide rows: the card opens about a character before the draft would reach the label, so the label never has to give way and a paste opens the card in one step.
Fold and unfold: the composer shifts for a few hundred milliseconds while the display, sidebar and keyboard settle, then lands in the right layout without bouncing between card and row.
Validation
vp run check:changed passes.
iOS: iPhone 18 Pro, Duo folded and unfolded, and iPad Pro 13″ at the final commit. Earlier rounds also covered iPhone SE, 16 and 16 Pro Max.
Android: phone emulators at 336 and 387 dp rows, and a tablet at 640 dp, including Back and the back gesture.
Made with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code via T3 Code.
Takeover
Taken over from @flamboh; their commits are kept and the behaviour in the table above is unchanged. The layout decision now lives in one pure resolver, compactComposerLayout.ts, with tests. The row width has one owner, and the terminal's existing keyboard store moved to lib/keyboardShowing.ts and is shared, so no new effect is added. Review and capture found five bugs, now fixed:
a shorter model label kept a wide-row card stuck open;
removing a thumbnail with the card open kept a short draft stuck in the card;
dictation from a focused phone composer left an empty card-height band;
the Android card closed for about 0.8 s after Save in the model sheet;
a wider label (e.g. "Ultrathink") made an open wide-row card close and reopen for a frame.
On Android the card now closes when a keyboard that showed since focus hides (Back). As a result, a hardware keyboard opens it on focus, as on iOS. When the editor has focus on a wide row, thumbnails sit above the row, so the label shows.
Evidence
Real Expo dev clients through agent-device 0.21.31, fresh synthetic databases (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0), recording clocks not frozen. Devices: iPhone 17 Pro (iOS 27.2, 402×874 pt, DPR 3, app text 16 pt), Pixel 9 (Android 16, 1080×2424 px, font scale 1.0), Pixel Tablet (Android 16, 2560×1600 px). Before is 96fc7b9551; after is 9bb5ad2613. Later than the captures:a50ca1cc64 fixes the Android flash visible in the F08 after recording, and a merge of main brings short model names (#24205) into the label text. A recapture at the head failed on the device pool. Full index with narrated timestamps for every row: evidence.md.
Not covered by the title: on a phone in an empty thread, the placeholder keeps the collapsed composer's inset. A card holding a multi-line draft with the keyboard down now covers the "No conversation yet" subtitle; before, the subtitle moved up with the card (before/after crop).
What else changed: in F04 the label and reasoning appear and the provider icon moves (the chevron's pixels are identical); at zero threshold every changed pixel is inside the model control. One opening frame of F02, at about 2.7 s, clips the placeholder text and truncates the model name while the card animates (crop). Across recordings: status-bar clock, keyboard predictions, timing, and the intended card geometry. On both sides, the wide empty-thread placeholder clips behind the composer while the keyboard is up; this predates the PR.
Unverified: F11 attachment removal (the before and after starting states differ); dictation (the app microphone was unavailable on the pool); Fold fold/unfold (F13/F14, clipped canvas and lease failures); iPad and iPad split view (F15); the exact 500 pt boundary (F16); font extremes (F17); hardware keyboard (F33); and harness-only rows F12, F18–F19 and F21–F35. The mobile thread composer uses keyboard visibility, row width, and draft measurements to control card opening, editor expansion, and model-label display. Thread placeholders use the collapsed composer height as their bottom inset when the detail screen provides it.
Changes: Thread composer and placeholder layout
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Adapt composer to keyboard and draft layout apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadComposer.tsx
The composer tracks keyboard visibility and layout measurements. It uses platform, row width, and draft state to configure focus-driven opening, editor expansion, and model-control display.
Set placeholder inset from collapsed composer height apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
The detail screen passes the collapsed composer height to the feed. The feed uses the optional inset for unavailable-content and empty-conversation placeholders, with bottomContentInset as the fallback.
Issue 24303: The composer changes narrow-row focus behavior, but the changes do not establish that taps intended for text input avoid the model selector in all cases.
Issue 16462: The editor expands for wrapped drafts, but the changes do not establish that an unfocused dictated transcript expands automatically.
Issue 21126: The editor expands for multi-line drafts, but the changes do not address keyboard dismissal and reopening during selection and editing.
Issue 24213: The composer can hide the model label when space is constrained, but the changes do not establish that model names avoid truncation in all controls.

Do not treat an invalidated compact slot as settled.
onRowLayout resets compactSlot.width to 0, but wrapIsSettled still checks editorLayoutWidth >= compactSlot.width - 1. A retained positive frame width therefore satisfies the check for the invalidated slot. A wrapped draft can expand from stale geometry during row resize. Require a positive current slot width and clear the frame measurement when the row width changes.

Defer overflow expansion until label yielding settles.
On a wide row, contentSize.width > compactWidth can set isExpanded before labelYielded updates. The slot then changes and compactWidth becomes unavailable until the next layout measurement. This can produce the reported brief card flash during rapid long-line insertion. Gate this overflow branch on the yielded-slot measurement, or yield the label before allowing expansion.

@coderabbitai on the two outside-diff comments in your latest review, both checked against e77b1a3 and left as is:
Invalidated slot treated as settled (166-168). Intentional. The editor slot is only measured while the composer is a row, so after a row resize with the card open there is no fresh slot width until it collapses. Requiring a positive width there would collapse an open card on every resize and reopen it after the next measurement, which is the card → row → card bounce this PR avoids. A wrapped draft in the resting row is only a transient, so the retained width has no visible effect.
Overflow expansion before the label yields (173-184). Already deferred. The render that sees the overflow also sets labelYielded; React re-runs that render before committing it, and in the re-run the beside-the-label slot measurement no longer matches, so compactWidth is 0 and the overflow branch is off until the yielded slot is measured. The device runs agree: pasting a long line showed no card frames on the Android tablet (62 of 62 row frames) or the unfolded iPhone Duo.

@flamboh: Understood. I will leave both outside-diff comments as they are.
Invalidated slot treated as settled (Lines 166-168). Your reasoning holds. The slot is measured only while the composer is a row. Requiring a positive width after a resize would collapse the open card and reopen it, which is the card → row → card bounce you want to avoid. The retained width only matters for a transient wrapped draft in the resting row.
Overflow expansion before the label yields (Lines 173-184). I did not re-trace the React re-run in this reply, so I take that part from your description. The mechanism is plausible: the re-run does not match the beside-the-label measurement, compactWidth is 0, and the overflow branch stays off until the yielded slot is measured. Your device evidence supports it: 62 of 62 row frames on the Android tablet and no card frames on the unfolded Duo. This also differs from the earlier "FAIL" banner in the 640 dp tablet capture, which showed a card flash during rapid input. I read that capture as the pre-fix state.

On wide rows, a line that wrapped beside the model label opened the card on
its two-line height before the label yielded; the card then measured one line
and collapsed. Treat that wrap as a reason to yield, and trust it only once
the editor is laid out at the yielded width, which is when the editor reports
its re-measured size (or none, when nothing changed). Until then the row stays
one line tall.

… the draft reaches it
The label no longer shrinks to the icon while typing on wide rows; the card opens about a
character before the draft would wrap. Card transitions slide the draft and model name
instead of jumping, and the height animation no longer restarts mid-open.
@flamboh, thanks for making model and reasoning controls discoverable on narrow composers and retaining a useful label on wide rows. updated your original branch at 902feeb5fe5c199a026ded04446fc766549f6629, preserving your commits and integrating current main (220eb73524ca).
compared the full original diff against the result. the change is now 3 files, +61/-18 against that main. removed the new label slide machinery and extra editor wrapper. retained main's immediate editor placement, which keeps expanded text above the toolbar. narrow focus expansion, wide labels, android keyboard dismissal, settings-sheet retention, resize invalidation, and the stable empty-thread placeholder remain.
verification passed through blacksmith: vp run check:changed (format, lint, both knip passes, mobile/scripts typechecks), plus 42 existing tests across feed follow, pending feed, settings-sheet state, and composer send presentation. two independent gpt-6.1-sol reviews found no code issues at this head. no new test files were added; those tests do not prove native focus/layout behavior. ci is running. coderabbit's automatic review is paused; no bot was invoked.
native verification and fresh before/after screenshots/video remain unverified. this vm has no attached android device, and the device tool returns "Agent device access is turned off for this environment." the mobile app supports ios/android; chrome's web composer would exercise different code. the original body captures predate this head and do not prove its current behavior. @flamboh, the remaining native check is narrow tap/focus, keyboard dismissal, model sheet open/close, long draft and image handling, and crossing the 500-point width boundary. no fresh UI evidence is claimed. this needs native qa and human approval before a merge-ready claim.
Takeover tests for pingdotgg#23986. Moves the composer's card and model-label
decisions out of useCompactComposerEditor and ThreadComposer into
compactComposerLayout.ts without changing behaviour, and covers the
narrow-row focus card, the wide-row resting label, the early overflow
threshold, and the compact-slot re-measure when the row width changes.

The editor hook owns the row width and compact slot in one state and calls
a single resolveCompactComposerLayout for the card and the model label.
The Android keyboard gate reuses the terminal's will-event keyboard store,
now shared as useKeyboardShowing, instead of a new effect, and iOS never
subscribes. The label hides only for thumbnails actually in the row.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ith the card open
On a wide row the model label sits beside the compact slot, which is only
measured while collapsed. Choosing a shorter model or reasoning label with the
card open kept the old, narrower slot, so a draft that now fit stayed in the
card. Forget the slot when the label resizes while the card stays open; layouts
that open or close the card only record the width so they cannot loop.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…eight
Dictation hides the editor without blurring it, so focus kept the card open as
an empty band above the dictation toolbar. Focus no longer opens the card while
dictation is showing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A label that grows while the card is open, such as the summary switching to
Ultrathink as the prompt mentions it, only narrows the compact slot, so the card
stays correct. Forget the slot only when the label shrinks.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s the draft in it
The compact slot is measured only while collapsed, so a measurement taken beside
a thumbnail outlived the thumbnail when it was removed with the card open. Each
measurement now records how many thumbnails sat in the row and is ignored for any
other count, so the next collapsed layout measures the slot again.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…om the model sheet
The Android card waited for keyboardWillShow, so after the model sheet restored
focus it closed until the keyboard arrived. Close it only when a keyboard that
showed since focus hides (Back), so a refocus waiting for its keyboard keeps it.
