fix(server): remote viewers reach a tab the desktop cannot paint - #27735
A remote viewer stays on "Connecting…" forever when the desktop app hosts the environment and its window is minimized. A desktop-rendered tab only produces frames while the host window is composited, so the viewer's first capture never answers. attachViewer runs before the WebSocket upgrade, so the socket never opens.
The page itself still looks healthy. document.visibilityState is "visible", navigation succeeds, and requestAnimationFrame never fires, which matches the report on #22461 after #25184 shipped.
Change
Desktop tabs now get 5 seconds to deliver a first frame to a viewer. If they don't, the server marks the tab headless and drops it with the existing reconnect end, so the client reconnects and findTab reopens the page in headless Chromium. Headless tabs and desktop tabs that paint are unchanged.
The move carries the page URL and downloads to the replacement tab. A new headless page normally only navigates when the session is still Loading, so a tab that had finished loading would otherwise reopen blank.
Behavior to review:
The page reloads when it moves, so unsaved page state is lost and it uses the server browser profile instead of the desktop one. The viewer could not see that page either way.
Downloads the tab already finished stay available, because the new page takes over the same folder and list.
A moved tab stays headless until it closes, as markHeadless already documents. New tabs render on the desktop again.
A viewer that attaches to a tab whose window was minimized after the page loaded takes the same path, because the first still does not answer.
This is one problem: a desktop tab that cannot paint never reaches a remote viewer. #22461 was closed by #25184 and is still reported on Linux on 0.1.5. I reproduced the minimized case below, but I did not confirm every report in those issues has this cause, so I used Refs rather than Fixes.
This complements #27663. That PR opens the socket when a renderer stops answering, while this one gets the viewer a picture when the host cannot paint. If #27663 lands first, this needs a rebase onto its forked capture.
Verification
Reproduced on Fedora 44, GNOME on Wayland, with Electron on X11 under Xwayland. The desktop dev build hosted an isolated data directory, and a scripted client paired as a remote viewer through /api/preview-stream/ws. The tab was an animated local fixture that counts requestAnimationFrame calls and records clicks and typing, opened in a thread that was not on screen. The window state was confirmed Iconic / _NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN with xprop.

With the fix, ServerBrowser.attachViewer ended at 5,006 ms, the viewer reconnected once, and the tab reported headless: true. The visible case did not reconnect and stayed desktop-rendered.
New test a desktop tab that paints nothing moves to headless and its viewer reconnects covers a tab that had already loaded. It also checks that a finished download survives the move. It passes here and times out on the base commit, and the download check fails if the folder is deleted.
a desktop tab whose first capture fails moves to headless without a frame covers a still that errors instead of hanging. A failed still waits for a live frame until the deadline, because one failure does not prove the page cannot paint.
Two viewers timing out together is exercised in the first test, but it did not force the interleaving where the second move finds the tab already replaced, so the tabs.get(key) !== tab guard itself is not proven by a test.
vp test run src/preview/ in apps/server: all ServerBrowser tests pass. ServerBrowserPage.test.ts fails with and without this change because the Playwright browser is not installed on this machine.
vp fmt, vp lint, knip:check and tsc --noEmit for apps/server pass.
Known limit: a host window covered by another maximized window is throttled, not stopped. On GNOME the page ran at about 1 rAF/s and the viewer got 8 to 44 frames in 11 s, with clicks and typing working. Frames still arrive, so the tab does not move to headless. Static pages send no screencast frames, so a low frame rate alone cannot show that a page is throttled.
Not checked: a locked screen, macOS, Windows, Electron on native Wayland, and iOS or Android clients. A viewer that stays connected while the window is minimized is not moved until it reconnects.
An earlier attempt with webContents.incrementCapturerCount stopped the tab painting even with the window visible, so I dropped it.
A desktop-rendered tab only produces frames while its host window is
composited. With the window minimized, the first capture never answers,
so the stream socket never upgrades and the viewer stays on "Connecting…"
forever.
Give desktop tabs a deadline for the first frame. When it passes, mark the
tab headless and tell the viewer to reconnect, which reopens the page in
headless Chromium.

When a desktop tab with completed downloads is minimized, attaching a viewer triggers this fallback and deletes those files, so previously returned download paths and IDs stop working even though the logical tab remains open. moveTabToHeadless reaches dropTab, which removes downloadDir(tab) and discards tab.downloads; preserve or transfer the download files and metadata during migration instead of running destructive cleanup.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The fallback restores remote viewing by automatically moving an unresponsive desktop tab to headless Chromium. Human judgment is needed on the resulting reload, loss of unsaved page state, and browser-profile switch; completed-download preservation is also an unresolved finding.

Desktop viewer startup now waits for an initial frame and moves a desktop tab to headless Chromium if no live frame arrives within five seconds. The transition preserves the tab URL and downloads. Tests cover stalled and failed captures, reconnection, and download retention.

Replace the timer with a cleanup milestone.
The pipeline reports that tsc --noEmit fails on this setTimeout. The delay also cannot prove that cleanup will not run later. Make cleanup observable and await its completion before checking the file.
As per coding guidelines: “Tests must not rely on sleeps or polling to await work.”

Deliver reconnect before waiting for browser startup.
attachViewer cannot return its queued reconnect until findTab finishes. On a first headless launch, PreviewBrowser can wait up to 45 seconds for installation, so the viewer remains connecting well beyond the five-second deadline. Start replacement creation independently and return the reconnect promptly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep downloads until the replacement opens successfully.
If contextFor or another later step fails, this deletion loses the only reference to the retained downloads. A retry creates a tab with an empty download list, while the files remain orphaned. Transfer ownership only after creation succeeds, and retain it for retry on failure.

A late status report could put the tab back to Success before the new page
opened, so it stayed on about:blank. Carry the URL with the move instead of
relying on the session's status. Two viewers timing out together could also
restore stale downloads and delete the new tab's folder, so the second move
now stops when the tab has already been replaced.

Cover a live frame before the rejected-capture deadline.
The rejected-capture test advances the clock to the five-second deadline before it joins the attach fiber. Its assertions run after the join and check only the reconnect item and headless: true. A change that moves the tab as soon as the still capture rejects can pass these assertions. The PR's follow-up keeps waiting for a live frame until the deadline instead of treating a failed still capture as proof that capture is finished. No test covers that path.
Add a case that emits Page.screencastFrame on the desktop session after the rejected capture and before the deadline. Assert that the viewer receives the frame without a reconnect item, and that the tab stays desktop-rendered (headless is not true). Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior (docs/internals/testing.md).
