New apps/docs/public/.htaccess (none shipped before): Link/MIME/CORS ported from dist/_headers plus Accept:text/markdown for /persist/ (subpages negotiate in-file — subdir rules shadow the domain-root block). Pre-checks: tags balanced, twins present, format clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added discovery links and metadata for documentation catalogs, including support for JSON and compressed catalog responses.
    • Documentation requests that accept Markdown can now receive the matching Markdown page, while existing Markdown files and listed assets retain their normal handling.
    • Added cross-origin access headers for specified catalog files.

The new Apache rules for agent discovery and Markdown negotiation have gaps. Markdown homepage responses can lose the discovery Link header, and HTML and Markdown responses can be mixed up by caches without a reliable Vary: Accept. Smaller discovery gaps remain for the explicit index.html URL and the agent-readability.json CORS access. Fix these before merging.

When an internal redirect occurs — whether from an `ErrorDocument`, `mod_rewrite`, `FallbackResource`, or any other internal redirect mechanism — the environment variables from the original request are made available to the redirect target with a `REDIRECT_` prefix.
  * For portability reasons, the names of environment variables may contain only letters, numbers, and the underscore character. In addition, the first character may not be a number. Characters which do not match this restriction will be replaced by an underscore when passed to CGI scripts and SSI pages.
  * A special case are HTTP headers which are passed to CGI scripts and the like via environment variables (see below). They are converted to uppercase and only dashes are replaced with underscores; if the header contains any other (invalid) character, the whole header is silently dropped. See below for a workaround.
  * The `SetEnv` directive runs late during request processing meaning that directives such as `SetEnvIf` and `RewriteCond` will not see the variables set with it.
  * When the server looks up a path via an internal subrequest such as looking for a `DirectoryIndex` or generating a directory listing with `mod_autoindex`, per-request environment variables are not inherited in the subrequest. Additionally, `SetEnvIf` directives are not separately evaluated in the subrequest due to the API phases `mod_setenvif` takes action in.

These directives alter the protocol behavior of `mod_proxy`. See the `mod_proxy` and `mod_proxy_http` documentation for more details.

Available in 2.4.59 and later

This variable allows a script running in CGI-like module to supply its own Content-Length HTTP response header. It should only be set on configuration sections that contain trusted scripts.

## REDIRECT_ variables ¶

When an internal redirect occurs — whether from an `ErrorDocument`, `mod_rewrite`, `FallbackResource`, or any other internal redirect mechanism — the environment variables from the original request are made available to the redirect target with a `REDIRECT_` prefix.

Two additional variables are always set:

`REDIRECT_URL`
The URL-path of the original request before the internal redirect. This is set by the core server, not by any specific module.
`REDIRECT_STATUS`
The HTTP status code that triggered the redirect. For error documents this is the error status (e.g., 404). For internal redirects from `mod_rewrite` or `FallbackResource`, this is typically 200.

For example, if `REQUEST_URI` was `/original/path` and an internal redirect sends the request to `/handler.php`, then the redirect target will see `REDIRECT_URL=/original/path` and `REQUEST_URI=/handler.php`.

These variables are available to CGI scripts, SSI pages, and in expressions. For more information about REDIRECT_ variables in the context of error documents, see Custom Error Responses.

## DirectoryIndex Directive ¶

Description: | List of resources to look for when the client requests a directory
Syntax: | `DirectoryIndex disabled | `local-url` [`local-url`] ...`
Default: | `DirectoryIndex index.html`
Context: | server config, virtual host, directory, .htaccess
Override: | Indexes
Status: | Base
Module: | mod_dir

The `DirectoryIndex` directive sets the list of resources to look for, when the client requests an index of the directory by specifying a / at the end of the directory name. `Local-url` is the (%-encoded) URL of a document on the server relative to the requested directory; it is usually the name of a file in the directory. Several URLs may be given, in which case the server will return the first one that it finds. If none of the resources exist and the `Indexes` option is set, the server will generate its own listing of the directory.

### Example

    DirectoryIndex index.html

then a request for `http://example.com/docs/` would return `http://example.com/docs/index.html` if it exists, or would list the directory if it did not.
## DirectoryIndexRedirect Directive ¶

Description: | Configures an external redirect for directory indexes.
Syntax: | `DirectoryIndexRedirect on | off | permanent | temp | seeother | `3xx-code` `
Default: | `DirectoryIndexRedirect off`
Context: | server config, virtual host, directory, .htaccess
Override: | Indexes
Status: | Base
Module: | mod_dir
Compatibility: | Available in version 2.3.14 and later

By default, the `DirectoryIndex` is selected and returned transparently to the client. `DirectoryIndexRedirect` causes an external redirect to instead be issued.

The argument can be:

  * `on`: issues a 302 redirection to the index resource.
  * `off`: does not issue a redirection. This is the legacy behavior of mod_dir.
  * `permanent`: issues a 301 (permanent) redirection to the index resource.
  * `temp`: this has the same effect as `on`
  * `seeother`: issues a 303 redirection (also known as "See Other") to the index resource.
  * `3xx-code`: issues a redirection marked by the chosen 3xx code.

### Example

    DirectoryIndexRedirect on

A request for `http://example.com/docs/` would return a temporary redirect to `http://example.com/docs/index.html` if it exists.

## DirectorySlash Directive ¶

Description: | Toggle trailing slash redirects on or off
Syntax: | `DirectorySlash On|Off`
Default: | `DirectorySlash On`
Context: | server config, virtual host, directory, .htaccess
Override: | Indexes
Status: | Base
Module: | mod_dir

The `DirectorySlash` directive determines whether `mod_dir` should fixup URLs pointing to a directory or not.

Typically if a user requests a resource without a trailing slash, which points to a directory, `mod_dir` redirects him to the same resource, but with trailing slash for some good reasons:

  * The user is finally requesting the canonical URL of the resource
  * `mod_autoindex` works correctly. Since it doesn't emit the path in the link, it would point to the wrong path.
  * `DirectoryIndex` will be evaluated only for directories requested with trailing slash.
  * Relative URL references inside html pages will work correctly.

If you don't want this effect and the reasons above don't apply to you, you can turn off the redirect as shown below. However, be aware that there are possible security implications to doing th…[truncated]</excerpt>

## Flag Quick Reference ¶

Flags can be combined: `[R=301,L]`, `[P,QSA]`, `[E=VAR:val,L]`. This table groups them by purpose, ordered by how commonly each is used.

Flag | Purpose | Effect | Common combos
--- | --- | --- | ---
Flow Control
[L] | Last rule | Stop processing rules (this pass) | [R=301,L] [F] [G]
[END] | Full stop | Stop all rewrite processing (no re-entry in .htaccess) | [R=301,END]
[S=N]  | Skip  | Skip next N rules (if/else logic)  |
[N] | Next (loop) | Restart ruleset from the top (caution: loop risk) |
[C] | Chain | Tie rule to the next; if this fails, skip chained rules |
Redirection and Proxying
[R=code]  | Redirect  | External redirect (default 302). Consider Redirect/RedirectMatch for simple cases  | [R=301,L] [R=302,L]
[P] | Proxy | Reverse proxy to target (requires `mod_proxy`) | [P,QSA]
Access Control
[F] | Forbidden | Return 403 (implies [L]) |
[G] | Gone | Return 410 (implies [L]) |
URL / Query String
[QSA] | Query string append | Append original query string to substitution | [QSA,L] [P,QSA]
[QSD] | Query string discard | Drop original query string entirely | [R=301,QSD,L]
[B] | Escape backrefs | Re-encode special chars in backreferences | [B,PT]
[NE] | No escape | Don't escape special chars in output (pass #, ? through) | [R=301,NE,L]
Metadata and Handlers
[E] | Set env var | Set an environment variable | [E=VAR:val,L]
[T] | MIME type | Force content type |
[H] | Handler | Force a content handler |
[PT] | Pass through | Pass result to next handler (needed with Alias/ScriptAlias) | [PT,L]
Cookie
[CO] | Set cookie | Set an HTTP cookie on the response | [CO=name:val:.domain,R=302,L]

This flag permanently forgets the PATH_INFO established before this round of `mod_rewrite` processing began. PATH_INFO will not be recalculated until the current round of `mod_rewrite` processing completes. Subsequent rules during this round of processing will see only the direct result of substitutions, without any PATH_INFO appended.

    # Request: /app/script.php/extra/path (PATH_INFO is /extra/path)
    # Without DPI, the substitution would see "script.php/extra/path"
    # and could inadvertently copy PATH_INFO into the result.
    RewriteRule "^script\.php(.*)$" "/new-app/handler$1" [DPI]

The [DPI] flag discards `/extra/path` so that only the substitution result (`/new-app/handler`) is passed to subsequent rules or the final request.

## E|env ¶

With the [E], or [env] flag, you can set the value of an environment variable. Note that some environment variables may be set after the rule is run, thus unsetting what you have set. See the Environment Variables document for more details on how Environment variables work.

The full syntax for this flag is:

    [E=VAR:VAL]
    [E=!VAR]

`VAL` may contain backreferences (`$N` or `%N`) which are expanded.

Using the short form

` [E=VAR] `

you can set the environment variable named `VAR` to an empty value.

The form

` [E=!VAR] `

allows to unset a previously set environment variable named `VAR`.

Environment variables can then be used in a variety of contexts, including CGI programs, other RewriteRule directives, or CustomLog directives.

The following example sets an environment variable called 'image' to a value of '1' if the requested URL-path is an image file. Then, that environmen…[truncated]</excerpt>

This renaming is especially relevant when using `mod_rewrite`'s [E] flag to set variables, since per-directory rewrites always trigger an internal redirect. See that section for examples and workarounds.

## Examples ¶

### Passing broken headers to CGI scripts

Starting with version 2.4, Apache is more strict about how HTTP headers are converted to environment variables in `mod_cgi ` and other modules: Previously any invalid characters in header names were simply translated to underscores. This allowed for some potential cross-site-scripting attacks via header injection.

If you have to support a client which sends broken headers and which can't be fixed, a simple workaround involving `mod_setenvif ` and `mod_headers` allows you to still accept these headers:

# Request Processing in the Apache HTTP Server 2.4

Available Languages: en

This document describes how the Apache HTTP Server processes requests internally, covering the full hook sequence from URI translation through content generation and logging. Module authors should understand these phases to correctly insert their processing at the appropriate point in the cycle.

All requests pass through `ap_process_request_internal()` in `server/request.c`, including subrequests and internal redirects. Do not duplicate this logic elsewhere; doing so will break when the request processing API changes.

The first major design principle is that all request processing paths (main requests, subrequests, and redirects) share a single code path. Duplicate code was folded back into `ap_process_request_internal()` in 2.0 to prevent the paths from falling out of sync.

Preserve the discovery Link header across homepage resolution.

IS_PERSIST_HOME matches only /persist/ and /persist/index.html, but Markdown requests rewrite to /persist/index.md. Apache does not reapply SetEnvIf for directory-index subrequests, and internal redirects expose inherited variables with a REDIRECT_ prefix. The final homepage response can therefore omit the header. Base the condition on the original request, such as THE_REQUEST, so both HTML and Markdown responses retain the links.

Same pattern is live on / and /codemap/ today — curl shows the Link header served through the DirectoryIndex subrequest (the ^/persist/index.html SetEnvIf covers the subrequest URI). Verifying /persist/ post-deploy; will fix if missing.

@SutuSebastian Your curl results show that the HTML header survives DirectoryIndex resolution on those deployments. My claim about that path was too broad.

For the /persist/ post-deploy check, test both Accept: text/html and Accept: text/markdown. The Markdown rewrite to /persist/index.md remains unverified. If both responses include the discovery Link header, no change is needed.
