Problem

1.8.1 ships two SQLite engines with known memory-safety bugs, and the native engine lets SQL reach files outside the database the editor opened.

  • WebAssembly engine on SQLite 3.49.1. CVE-2025-7709 (fixed in 3.50.3) is an out-of-bounds access through a corrupt FTS5 index; its precondition is "complete control over the database content", which is this extension's threat model (a crafted database file). FTS5 is compiled in, and 1.8.1 made FTS5 shadow tables browsable. CVE-2025-6965 (3.50.2) also applies.
  • Native engine on SQLite 3.51.2. CVE-2026-11822/11824 (fixed in 3.53.2) is an FTS5 heap write past the end of a buffer with SQLITE_DBCONFIG_DEFENSIVE off. Both engines leave DEFENSIVE off. Whether file content alone reaches either CVE through normal browsing is unverified; there is no PoC.
  • Native SQL path authority. fix(native): refuse SQL-level ATTACH and DETACH on native connections #562 refused SQL-level ATTACH/DETACH in native-worker.js by mirroring SQLite's tokenizer, which only holds while that mirror matches every SQLite release. It deferred VACUUM INTO, which creates a copy of the open database at any path. Against the shipped 1.8.1 runtime, VACUUM INTO through query, run, exec, a bound destination, and a read-only open each created a file outside the bound directory (regression test below, shown failing).
  • 12 open Dependabot alerts on main (build tooling and website only; nothing ships in the VSIX). They close only when main gets the fixed lockfiles.

Solution

  • Both engines move to SQLite 3.54.1, not 3.54.0, which has a heap overflow on 32-bit builds (WebAssembly is wasm32).
  • The native runtime (zknpr/txiki.js) installs a C authorizer on every connection at open. It refuses ATTACH and DETACH, except '' (plain VACUUM's private temporary database) and one path trusted code permits with the new permitAttach(path). VACUUM's internal ATTACH reaches the authorizer with the dequoted destination, so SQL-level VACUUM INTO is refused by the same rule. The worker's own export snapshot permits exactly its host-chosen path for the duration of the VACUUM main INTO ? and withdraws it when the call settles.
  • The sql.js fork takes six upstream fixes (#638, #639, #632, #640, #641 and fa1f0c17). #634 (embedded NUL in TEXT) was cherry-picked and reverted, see Architecture.
  • Dependency PRs chore(deps): bump the root-routine-updates group across 1 directory with 6 updates #566 and chore(deps): bump the website-routine-updates group across 1 directory with 8 updates #567 plus in-range markdown-it and brace-expansion updates clear all 12 alerts.
  • README links the desktop app.
  • @vscode/vsce 4.0.0 (chore(deps-dev): bump @vscode/vsce from 3.9.2 to 4.0.0 #559): the six VSIX packages contain the same files and bytes as with 3.9.2, except the devDependency version in the bundled package.json.

Architecture

Defense in depth for native SQL. The worker's tokenizer guard stays in front for its specific error code (ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED). The C authorizer is the backstop that does not depend on SQLite's tokenizer rules, which addresses the risk of upgrading SQLite underneath a JS mirror of its tokenizer. SQLITE_LIMIT_ATTACHED=0 was rejected because VACUUM attaches internally and it would break exports. Verified with SQLite 3.54.1 that VACUUM's internal ATTACH reaches the authorizer ('' for plain VACUUM, the target for VACUUM INTO, literal or bound) and that an expression filename arrives as NULL (refused).

The authorizer runs inside prepare and, for VACUUM, inside step with SQLite's connection mutex held. It takes the handle mutex, which is the same lock order the existing progress callback uses: nothing holds the handle mutex while calling into SQLite with a statement able to run concurrently.

Why #634 is reverted. cell-containment.ts decides whether TEXT is exactly representable as a JS string by comparing the engine's string with the stored bytes. With #634, WASM returns 'a\0b' intact while native still truncates at NUL, so the two engines would disagree on NUL-containing TEXT (WASM: string, native: raw bytes). raw_text_transport.test.ts caught it for UTF-8, UTF-16le and UTF-16be. Adopting it is a separate product decision.

Native SQLite build flag. SQLITE_OMIT_COMPLETE is dropped from the txiki SQLite build: 3.54 adds sqlite3_incomplete() inside complete.c's OMIT guard but lists it unconditionally in the extension API table, so the link fails. SQLite documents OMIT options as unsupported with the amalgamation.

Reproducible runtime build. extension-functions.c asserts embed __FILE__, and build-query-plan.mjs compiled from a random mkdtemp directory, so no rebuild could reproduce the pinned WASM byte for byte (the shipped 1.8.1 WASM embeds /Users/zero/dev/SQLite-Explorer/.tmp/query-plan-build-wgPO12/...). Emscripten compiles now pass -ffile-prefix-map for the build directory and the checkout. The builder also gates on zig cc --version reporting clang version 21.1.0: the Linux libraries record the linker identity in .comment, so a distribution Zig such as Homebrew's (same zig version) cannot reproduce them and is refused with an explicit error.

Per-file changes

File Change
natives/native-worker.js runVacuumInto permits the snapshot path around VACUUM main INTO ? and withdraws it when the call settles; a withdrawal failure is reported unless the connection is closing. SQLITE_AUTH from the runtime's authorizer is reported with ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED (one message, no finalize echo). DETACH refusals get their own explanation. Guard and exec comments corrected.
natives/*/tjs txiki.js runtimes from run 39983760340 (SQLite 3.54.1 + authorizer).
natives/*/query-plan.*, vendor/sql.js/*, website/public/sqlite-viewer/sql-wasm.*, vendor/query-plan-manifest.json Rebuilt runtime on SQLite 3.54.1 and sql.js 3181cc5e. macOS dylibs and Windows dll are byte-identical; Linux .so differ only in .comment. WASM grows from 778 KB to 806 KB.
scripts/build-query-plan.mjs Pin sql.js 3181cc5e and the 3.54.1 amalgamation; -ffile-prefix-map; gate on the official Zig 0.16.0 identity (probe runs in the temp build dir because zig cc --version writes an empty a.o); installer metadata no longer names an unrelated branch and run.
scripts/refresh-natives.mjs, tests/unit/artifact_refresh_policy.test.ts Re-pin txiki commit, run and five digests.
tests/unit/native_attach_guard.test.ts New: VACUUM INTO refused at every SQL entry point including read-only opens, with the coded message; vacuumInto control arm; permit withdrawn after the RPC; the runtime itself refuses ATTACH without the worker guard, with a permitAttach control arm; DETACH message. Fixture paths are SQL-escaped, cleanup is registered before the worker starts, and an attached schema is cleared by reopening (DETACH is refused).
tests/unit/nativeWorker.test.ts runVacuumInto permit order, withdrawal on failure, no permit for a refused snapshot, withdrawal failures surfaced except while closing.
tests/unit/native_real_smoke.test.ts, tests/unit/web_demo_worker.test.ts Bundled SQLite 3.54.1 and its REAL rendering (9.6529377952984946e+282).

Security

  • Fixed: the SQLite CVEs above in both engines; SQL-level ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO on every native connection, enforced in C.
  • Verified closed: SQL load_extension() on native stays refused, with a C-API load of the same library as the control.
  • Not changed: the open and vacuumInto RPC path arguments and the workspaceQueryPlan library path are filled by the host; fix(native): refuse SQL-level ATTACH and DETACH on native connections #562 listed them and they remain host-trusted.
  • Known, pre-existing, not in this release: the WASM engine truncates TEXT at NUL when binding (imports, edits) because #634 is not adopted; a data-integrity limitation of the user's own writes, not a trust-boundary issue.
  • Desktop app: SQLite-Explorer-App 0.3.1 bundles byte-identical copies of the 1.8.1 engines and needs its own rebuild on top of this release. That rebuild cannot only swap the runtime: its shim exports with VACUUM INTO ? (core/native/sqljs-shim.js:1025 on desktop-v1.8.1-port), which the new authorizer refuses unless the shim calls permitAttach(target) around it.

Review findings (/code-review, verified)

# Finding Evidence Verdict Resolution
1 SQL-level VACUUM INTO refusal is a bare "authorization denied" (doubled by finalize on run) native-worker.js error reply used describeNativeError only CONFIRMED SQLITE_AUTH mapped to ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED; regression red then green
2 exec rewrite is not sqlite3_exec; comment says it is guard exec override comment CONFIRMED (latent; behaviour documented in #562) Comment corrected; behaviour kept
3 Drop the JS tokenizer layer and rely on the C authorizer design Declined for 1.8.2 Both layers kept: the JS layer gives the coded error before compile (its fuzz coverage was overstated; see the correction under Differential fuzz)
4 Linux .so reproducibility depends on the Zig distribution; CHANGELOG overclaims .comment differs (Homebrew LLD vs LLD 21.1.0) CONFIRMED Gate on zig cc --version; CHANGELOG states the toolchain
5 sideEffects() cleans up with DETACH, which is refused test fixture CONFIRMED (test hygiene) Reopen the bound database instead
6 VACUUM INTO test paths not SQL-escaped from a checkout under o'neil/: "SQL logic error" CONFIRMED sqlLiteral(); red then green from the same path
7 Empty catch swallows every permit-withdrawal failure runVacuumInto CONFIRMED (no-silent-failures rule) Only the closing case is ignored; regression red then green
8 Builder installer metadata names an unrelated branch and run build-query-plan.mjs CONFIRMED (metadata only; installArtifacts reads neither) Branch master, no run
9 Fixture temp dir leaks if worker.start() throws test fixture CONFIRMED (test hygiene) Cleanup registered right after mkdtemp
10 DETACH refusal reuses ATTACH's justification assertSqlPathAuthority CONFIRMED Per-verb message; regression red then green

The reviewer found nothing exploitable.

Second round (/code-review on 8f83950)

# Finding Verdict Resolution
1 Relative --zig path fails with ENOENT at the identity probe (cwd: build) CONFIRMED Tool paths resolved once; regression red then green
2 a.o assertion has no control arm CONFIRMED Fake zig writes a.o into its cwd; the test fails when the probe is moved back into the checkout (mutation shown)
3 Refusal text replaces the whole AggregateError, dropping a failed withdrawal CONFIRMED Other failures appended; red then green
4 Every failing run statement reported twice (finalize echo) CONFIRMED (pre-existing) Same-code finalize failure collapses to one; different code still aggregated; red then green
5 One combined gate message names the wrong check CONFIRMED Separate checks, cheapest first; red then green
6 Cancellation or deadline wrappers hide a failed withdrawal CONFIRMED (unreachable with today's binding) Mitigated by 7: the permit holder is closed
7 Permit stays installed on a live connection after a failed withdrawal CONFIRMED Snapshot connection closed; red then green
8 Refusal detection only one level deep CONFIRMED Walks members and cause recursively; red then green
9 Emscripten gate is a substring test CONFIRMED Exact identity line; 15.0.0 and another commit refused
10 'Invalid DB' string coupling CONFIRMED, accepted Unrecognized errors take the reporting and closing branch, which fails closed
11 Manifest does not record the Zig clang identity CONFIRMED zigClang recorded; outputs byte-identical
12 ATTACH fixtures interpolate raw paths CONFIRMED All 26 escaped
13 Side-effect reset reopens read-write regardless of mode CONFIRMED reopen() tracks mode
14 CLAUDE.md and refresh-sqljs.mjs understate the Zig requirement CONFIRMED Updated
15 Duplicated fake-toolchain scaffolding; sqlLiteral duplicates quote CONFIRMED / REFUTED Shared withFakeToolchain; quote lives inside the generated tjs script source and cannot share a TS helper

The reviewer found nothing exploitable.

Bot round (Codex and CodeRabbit on 9851652)

Finding Verdict Resolution
Codex P2 / CodeRabbit: after a failed permit withdrawal the closed AsyncDatabase stays in asyncDb, so bounded reads hit a closed handle CONFIRMED (unreachable with today's binding) releaseAsyncDatabase closes through closeAsyncDatabase, clearing asyncDb; red then green
CodeRabbit: forward-slash tool paths stay relative on Windows CONFIRMED Paths with either separator are resolved
CodeRabbit: shebang fake toolchain cannot run on Windows CONFIRMED (pre-existing pattern) Toolchain tests skipped on win32 with a reason; the builder itself needs make, tar and unzip, and CI runs on Linux

Third round (/code-review on the release range)

# Finding Verdict Resolution
1 Stale asyncDb after a failed permit withdrawal Already fixed in bac8c01 releaseAsyncDatabase
2 Remove the JS tokenizer and exec override Declined for 1.8.2 Same reasoning as round one; worth revisiting after the release
3 Refusal text loses the IPC length bound CONFIRMED Bounded like other worker errors; red then green
4 \v treated as whitespace, unlike SQLite's tokenizer CONFIRMED (comment) Comment corrected; behaviour is fail-safe and unchanged
5 Co-author trailers on 248327c and 908a9da Accepted by the maintainer No history rewrite
6 CHANGELOG omits CVE-2025-6965 CONFIRMED Listed
7 Smoke test interpolates an unescaped path CONFIRMED Escaped
8 Builder resolves the emcc path twice CONFIRMED Resolved once

Fourth round (/code-review on the release range, CodeRabbit on 5be4e1f)

# Finding Verdict Resolution
1 The VACUUM INTO permit also applies to work already queued on the connection CONFIRMED (latent, unreachable) Requests run one at a time through requestTail, cancel only aborts a controller, and every job on the shared connection settles before its request returns. The JS statement guard refuses ATTACH before the runtime sees it. Declined for 1.8.2; a job-scoped permit is a follow-up (with #5)
2 A synchronous throw from run skips the permit withdrawal CONFIRMED (latent: txiki's run returns a rejected promise) run is called through a promise; red then green
3 execBatch's savepoint-cleanup wrapper drops the original error, so a runtime refusal loses its code CONFIRMED (error text only; the refusal holds) batchCleanupError keeps both errors in an AggregateError; red then green
4 Remove the JS tokenizer and exec override Declined for 1.8.2 Same reasoning as rounds one and three
5 Tie the permit's lifetime to the VACUUM job in C Declined for 1.8.2 Needs a runtime API change and a new txiki build. The cited close-failure case leaves the permit on a handle no request can reach, because asyncDb is cleared before the close
6 releaseAsyncDatabase's non-shared branch is unreachable and assumes close() returns a promise CONFIRMED (latent) Branch kept, since dropping it would leave such a connection open with its permit, and its close runs through a promise; red then green
7 The release test stubs closeAsyncDatabase, so it never checks that asyncDb is cleared (also CodeRabbit) CONFIRMED (test gap; code correct) The test runs the real functions over one shared binding. A mutant that clears asyncDb after the await passes the old test and fails the new one
8 Co-author trailers on 248327c and 908a9da Accepted by the maintainer No history rewrite
CR CHANGELOG calls the C rule "the same" without the export exception CONFIRMED (wording) The entry now ends "and allows only the snapshot file of a running export"
CR Shebang fake toolchain cannot run on Windows (re-posted) Already handled Skipped on win32 since 3389204

Test plan

Run locally on macOS aarch64 unless noted.

Gates (final tree)

  • node scripts/build.mjs: exit 0, no unexpected generated drift.
  • node scripts/build-query-plan.mjs --check: all generated copies match the manifest.
  • npx tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json: exit 0.
  • npm test: 2583/2583, 0 skipped (the native lane ran on the CI-built aarch64-macos runtime).
  • native_attach_guard against the bundled runtime: 7/7.
  • npm run test:native-smoke: 111/111.
  • npm --prefix website run build: exit 0 with the new WASM assets.

Regressions shown failing before, passing after

  • Review fixes Add Vercel Speed Insights to Next.js #1, Bump qs from 6.12.1 to 6.14.1 #7, Bump @azure/identity from 4.2.0 to 4.13.0 #10: failing on 2435156, passing after; Bump tar-fs from 2.1.1 to 2.1.4 #6 failing from a checkout path containing an apostrophe, passing after from the same path.
  • Builder gate refuses a Zig that reports 0.16.0 with a Homebrew clang identity; a rebuild with the official toolchain after the builder change changed only the manifest's builder input hash (all ten outputs byte-identical).
  • native_attach_guard: SQL-level VACUUM INTO (query, bound, run, exec, read-only open) EXECUTED on the shipped 1.8.1 worker and runtime and created files outside the bound directory; refused with no file on this branch.
  • txiki tests/test-sqlite-attach-authority.js: fails on the shipped runtime ("SQLite 3.51.2 predates the CVE floor"; with the floor skipped, "ATTACH of an existing file is refused" fails); passes on the new runtime, locally and on all five CI targets (run 39983760340).
  • sql.js fork suite: test_paged_vfs_isolation and test_paged_writable_overlay caught the Map registry left as {} in openPaged; fixed before push. 33/34 against the shipped WASM bytes; the remaining test_worker needs worker.sql-wasm.js, which this build does not produce or ship.
  • raw_text_transport (UTF-8, UTF-16le, UTF-16be) failed with #634 applied and passes with it reverted.
  • Fourth round Add Vercel Speed Insights to Next.js #2, V1.1.0 #3, Bump tar-fs from 2.1.1 to 2.1.4 #6: the new tests fail on 5be4e1f's worker (TypeError: bad arguments escapes, Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'catch'), missing batchCleanupError), and V1.1.0 #3's fails with the helper reduced to the old plain Error; all pass after. Bump qs from 6.12.1 to 6.14.1 #7: a closeAsyncDatabase mutant that clears asyncDb after the await passes the old test and fails the new one.

Controls and provenance

  • Rebuild at the previous pins on this machine reproduced the shipped runtime except metadata: WASM embedded build path, Linux .so .comment (all other 13 ELF sections byte-identical).
  • New pin rebuilt twice in different checkouts, the second from a fresh clone of the pushed fork: identical hashes for all ten outputs.
  • txiki stdlib bytecode bundle regenerated from the previous sqlite.js reproduces the committed bytes.
  • refresh-natives.mjs re-validated run 39983760340 (master@0353db57, workflow_dispatch) and the five sha256 digests before installing.
  • SQL load_extension() refused on old and new native runtimes; C-API load of the same library succeeds (control).

Differential fuzz (not committed; harness in the session scratchpad)

  • Correction (2026-10-23, after release): the run below covered far less than stated. The harness's generator, seed * 1103515245 + 12345 in floating point, loses low bits and enters a 419-state cycle after 3,824 draws, so the 40,000 statements were about 95 distinct statement shapes. The 0-trace result holds only for those shapes. The deterministic guard, contract and smoke tests above are unaffected. A corrected harness (Math.imul) is being committed as an opt-in lane that runs on all five targets.
    • Original claim, kept for the record: 40,000 generated statements (30,000 single, 10,000 multi-statement exec scripts) through query, run and exec on the new aarch64-macos runtime: ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO with tokenizer trivia (comments, BOM, empty statements, mixed case), EXPLAIN prefixes, literal, bound, concatenated, printf and parenthesized filenames. Control: node:sqlite would attach or create a file for 7,634 of them. The worker left 0 traces (no attached schema, no new file outside the bound directory, targets unchanged); 35,536 refused by policy, 1 rejected by SQLite for another reason. The run's own control-share sanity threshold (20%) came in at 19.1%; reported as is.

vsce 4.0.0 (#559)

  • Six VSIX packaged with 3.9.2 and with 4.0.0 from the same tree: same entries and same bytes, except extension/package.json (the devDependency string) and, after the CHANGELOG line, extension/changelog.md. vsce ls --no-dependencies lists the same 38 files. No vsce warnings.
  • npm ci from the regenerated lockfile leaves the tree clean; npm test 2583/2583 on that install.
  • vsce publish takes the PAT from VSCE_PAT (publish-marketplace.mjs), and 4.0.0's getPAT returns it before opening the credential store (out/publish.js:278), so the new legacy-credential migration prompt cannot block a publish.
  • Not run: an actual Marketplace publish with 4.0.0 (happens at release).

Size

  • Deflate-compressed: +139 KB across all changed runtime files (about 1.5%); per-platform VSIX about +35 to 42 KB (one tjs plus the WASM).

Not run

  • GUI lanes (VS Code desktop, VS Code Web, desktop app) and the test:desktop lane.
  • Native runtimes on Linux, Windows and Intel macOS were exercised only by the txiki contract tests in CI, not by the extension's native test lanes; CI's npm test on this PR covers Linux x64.
  • Fuzz on targets other than aarch64-macos.

zknpr and others added 8 commits October 8, 2026 22:57
…#562)

The native worker runs SQL on real-filesystem tjs:sqlite handles. Any SQL
that reached it could ATTACH an arbitrary path: read every existing SQLite
database the user can open, write into it, and turn any existing empty file
into a database. A read-only open does not stop this; it blocks writes
through the attached schema, not the ATTACH or reads through it. Creating a
new file is refused today only because the worker opens without
SQLITE_OPEN_CREATE, which attached schemas inherit.

No webview RPC reaches this on its own: the view and SQL editor paths wrap
user text in CREATE VIEW / SELECT * FROM (...) and enforce one statement with
SQLite's own parser. The worker channel itself had no path authority, so any
host-side SQL injection or future raw-SQL feature would have become
arbitrary file read/write.

The guard is installed once on Database.prototype and
AsyncDatabase.prototype before any connection exists, so it covers the
primary handle, the AsyncDatabase reader and dedicated cell-read snapshots,
and every RPC that reaches SQL (query, queryNumeric, queryBatch,
querySingle, run, runSingle, exec, execBatch, prepare/stmtRun, queryBounded,
queryExportSpool, describeReadQuery, compileBatch, workspaceQuery,
workspaceQueryPlan):

- prepare, allAsync and AsyncDatabase.all/run compile only the first
statement, so they refuse a leading ATTACH/DETACH, also behind EXPLAIN or
EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN. Leading trivia is skipped as tokenize.c does:
whitespace, -- comments to \n only, unnested /* */ comments, the ; of
empty statements, and a U+FEFF byte-order mark at a token start.
- exec ran every statement natively. It now walks the script through the
guarded prepare one statement at a time, with SQLite's parser finding each
boundary, so a later ATTACH is checked before it compiles.
- Non-string SQL is refused because the binding coerces it with ToString:
['ATTACH ...'] would otherwise compile unchecked.

ATTACH/DETACH cannot nest in WITH, a subquery, VALUES, a compound SELECT,
CREATE VIEW or a trigger body, and sqlite_attach() is not callable by name,
so checking each statement's leading verb is complete. EXPLAIN ATTACH is
inert on SQLite 3.51.2 and is refused anyway.

The refusal message carries ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED, which survives
the string-only worker IPC. The worker's own SAVEPOINT, PRAGMA journal_mode,
CREATE/DROP TEMP VIEW and VACUUM INTO statements are unaffected.

The native smoke test that attached ':memory:' to build a TEMP trigger
bound to an attached schema now asserts that the ATTACH is refused. That
state can no longer exist on a native connection. WASM tests still cover
the rebind refusal.

Root: markdown-it 14.3.0 -> 14.3.3 (GHSA-vfgh-jcmw-g37q, GHSA-r7fv-28h4-cvq7,
GHSA-gfr2-rv44-r23c, GHSA-253c-mchw-3w2r), pulled in by @vscode/vsce.

Website: brace-expansion 1.1.18 -> 1.1.21 under eslint-config-next
(GHSA-q2hr-2g5m-vwhr) and 5.0.9 -> 5.0.12 under eslint.

Both are in-range `npm update`s of build-time dependencies; neither ships
in the VSIX or in the website's runtime bundle. With #566 (ovsx 1.3.0
drops follow-redirects) and #567 (next 16.4.2, source-map-js 1.2.2) this
clears all 12 open alerts once it reaches main.

The lockfile diff also carries npm 11's peer flags on four root
devDependencies and drops optional wasm32 @emnapi entries from the
website lockfile; both are local-npm normalization only.

Apple Silicon .dmg, Linux x86-64 .deb, Windows x86-64 installer) and
their unsigned status, deferring first-launch steps to the app's own
install notes. The README is the Marketplace and Open VSX listing, so
this goes live with the next publish.

…UM INTO

Re-pin the five txiki.js runtimes to zknpr/txiki.js master@0353db57
(Actions run 39983760340):

- SQLite 3.51.2 -> 3.54.1, fixing CVE-2026-11822/11824 (FTS5 heap write
with DEFENSIVE off, which this engine leaves off).
- Every connection installs a C authorizer at open that refuses ATTACH
and DETACH except plain VACUUM's private temporary database and one
path trusted code permits with permitAttach(). VACUUM INTO attaches
its destination, so SQL-level VACUUM INTO is refused by the same rule.

#562's tokenizer-mirroring guard in native-worker.js stays in front for
its error code; the authorizer is the backstop that does not depend on
SQLite's tokenizer staying unchanged across updates.

runVacuumInto, the host's export snapshot, permits exactly its
host-chosen path around `VACUUM main INTO ?` and withdraws it when the
call settles, including on failure.

Regression tests, shown failing on the shipped 1.8.1 runtime: SQL-level
VACUUM INTO through query, run, exec, a bound destination and a
read-only open each created a file outside the bound directory; the
runtime refusing ATTACH without the worker guard, with a permitAttach
control arm; the snapshot permit order and withdrawal.

native_real_smoke pins the bundled SQLite 3.54.1 and its REAL-to-text
rendering, which now uses up to 17 significant digits.
Rebuild the WebAssembly runtime and the five query-plan libraries from
sqlite-amalgamation-3540100.zip (SHA3-256 pinned) and zknpr/sql.js
3181cc5e:

- SQLite 3.49.1 -> 3.54.1 fixes CVE-2025-7709 (corrupt FTS5 index, with
"complete control over the database content" as its precondition) and
CVE-2025-6965. 3.54.1 rather than 3.54.0, which has a heap overflow on
  32-bit builds such as wasm32.
- sql.js upstream fixes: #638, #639 (SQL larger than the stack), #632,
#640, #641 and fa1f0c17 (isolated SQL names and function
registrations). #634 (embedded NUL in TEXT) is cherry-picked and
reverted in the fork: the WASM engine would return 'a\0b' as a string
while the native engine keeps raw bytes, which raw_text_transport
  pins for UTF-8, UTF-16le and UTF-16be.

The build is now reproducible. extension-functions.c asserts embed
__FILE__, and the builder compiled from a random mkdtemp directory, so
no rebuild could reproduce the pinned WASM. Emscripten compiles pass
-ffile-prefix-map for the build directory and the checkout; two
rebuilds in different checkouts, one from a fresh clone of the pushed
fork, produce identical hashes for all ten outputs. The macOS and
Windows query-plan libraries are byte-identical to the previous pin;
the Linux ones differ only in the .comment linker string (official Zig
0.16.0 tarball instead of Homebrew's build).
Bump the extension and lockfile to 1.8.2 and document the SQLite 3.54.1
engine updates, the native ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO refusals, the
upstream sql.js fixes, the dependency alert fixes and the reproducible
runtime build.

📝 Walkthrough

The 1.8.2 update blocks native SQL-level ATTACH and DETACH and limits VACUUM INTO to host-authorized snapshots. It updates bundled SQLite and sql.js artifacts, adds desktop app information to the README, and revises release and build metadata.

Changes: SQLite Runtime and Release

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native SQL restrictions and snapshot authorization
natives/native-worker.js, tests/unit/nativeWorker.test.ts, tests/unit/native_attach_guard.test.ts, tests/unit/native_real_smoke.test.ts
Native SQL entry points reject ATTACH and DETACH. runVacuumInto temporarily permits the selected snapshot path and withdraws the permit after execution. Tests cover blocked statements, side effects, snapshot behavior, and permit cleanup.
SQLite and sql.js runtime refresh
package.json, scripts/refresh-natives.mjs, vendor/sql.js/sql-wasm.js, website/public/sqlite-viewer/sql-wasm.js, tests/unit/artifact_refresh_policy.test.ts, tests/unit/native_real_smoke.test.ts, tests/unit/web_demo_worker.test.ts
Bundled SQLite updates to 3.54.1, and the sql.js dependency updates to 1.15.0. Generated runtime files, native artifact pins, and version expectations are updated.
Pinned query-plan build toolchain
scripts/build-query-plan.mjs, scripts/refresh-sqljs.mjs, tests/unit/query_plan_artifacts.test.ts, vendor/query-plan-manifest.json, CLAUDE.md
The query-plan build pins sql.js and SQLite sources and validates Emscripten, Zig, and bundled Clang versions. Tests cover toolchain checks, and the manifest records updated build and artifact metadata.
Release notes and distribution details
CHANGELOG.md, package.json, website/package.json, README.md
The changelog and package version reflect 1.8.2. Dependency versions are updated. The README adds desktop app downloads, supported packages, and installation notes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: release SQLite Explorer 1.8.2" names the release version, which matches the changelog entry and the package.json version bump. However, the PR's main substance is security hardening: a native SQLite authorizer refuses SQL-level ATTACH, DETACH, and VACUUM INTO, alongside the SQLite 3.54.1 update. The title does not mention the security refusal, so it only partly describes the changeset. It is a release-style title and is not vague, so it is not inconclusive.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes match the stated 1.8.2 release scope: SQLite updates, native SQL authorization, dependency updates, reproducible-build controls, tests, and release documentation. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

A rabbit checks the SQL gate,
“No stray attachments pass this plate!”
A snapshot gets a pass, then none,
The bundled engines greet the sun.
New desktop links shine bright and clear,
The bunny hops through release cheer.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

- Report the runtime authorizer's refusal (SQLITE_AUTH) with
ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED. SQL-level VACUUM INTO previously failed
with a bare "authorization denied", and on the run RPC the same code a
  second time from finalize.
- Give DETACH its own refusal message instead of ATTACH's justification.
- Surface a failed ATTACH-permit withdrawal after VACUUM INTO unless the
connection is closing; the empty catch hid any failure that leaves the
  permit open.
- Correct the guard's exec comment: the per-statement walk is not a
  drop-in sqlite3_exec.
- Refuse Zig distributions other than the official 0.16.0 release in the
runtime builder. Linux libraries record the linker identity in
.comment, so Homebrew's zig (same `zig version`) could not reproduce
the pinned bytes. The identity probe runs in the temp build directory
because `zig cc --version` writes an empty a.o. Installer metadata no
longer names an unrelated branch and run. A rebuild with the official
toolchain changes only the builder's input hash; all ten outputs are
byte-identical. CHANGELOG states the required toolchain.
- Attach-guard tests: SQL-escape fixture paths (they failed from a
checkout path containing an apostrophe), register cleanup before the
worker starts, and clear an attached schema by reopening, since DETACH
  is refused.

Regressions for the error code, the DETACH message, the withdrawal
failure, the apostrophe path and the Zig gate each fail before this
change and pass after.
Worker:
- A runtime ATTACH refusal keeps every failure it was wrapped with
(permit withdrawal, deadline cleanup, cancellation) instead of
replacing the whole message, and is found at any depth of
  AggregateError members and `cause` chains.
- A failing statement whose finalize repeats the step's error code is
reported once; a different finalize failure is still aggregated.
This removes the duplicated message from every failing `run`, not only
  SQLITE_AUTH.
- When the ATTACH permit cannot be withdrawn after VACUUM INTO, the
snapshot connection is closed so no handle keeps authorizing that path,
even where a cancellation or deadline wrapper hides the error. A
reworded closing message takes this fail-closed branch.

Builder:
- Resolve relative --emcc/--zig paths once; the identity probe runs in the
temp build directory and failed with ENOENT on a relative path.
- Check the exact Emscripten identity line (a substring test admitted
15.0.0 or another commit), then `zig version`, then the zig cc identity,
each with its own message, cheapest first.
- Record the zig cc identity in the manifest as `zigClang`. A rebuild
changes only the manifest's builder hash and the new field; all ten
  outputs are byte-identical.
- CLAUDE.md and refresh-sqljs.mjs name the official Zig release.

Tests:
- Shared fake toolchain whose zig writes a.o into its cwd like the real
one, so the probe-location test has a control arm (it fails when the
  probe runs in the checkout).
- All ATTACH fixture paths are SQL-escaped, and side-effect resets reopen
  in the case's current mode.

Regressions for relative tool paths, exact toolchain checks, the manifest
field, preserved and nested refusal errors, the finalize echo and the
connection close each fail before this change and pass after.

P2 Badge Clear asyncDb after closing its connection

If permitAttach(null) throws for a live handle, this branch closes it but leaves the module-level asyncDb reference set. Later bounded queries still select that closed handle because shouldUseAsyncDatabase checks only whether it is truthy, so a permit-withdrawal failure can make bounded table reads fail until the database is reopened; clear the shared reference when closing this connection.

Make the fake toolchain executable on Windows.

On Windows, execFileSync cannot launch these extensionless JavaScript files by their shebang. The tests that use withFakeToolchain, including the pinned-source test, fail at the tool check instead of testing their intended conditions. Use a platform-compatible fake executable or invoke the fixture through Node without changing the builder’s tool contract. (nodejs.org)

Update the fake tool setup used by withFakeToolchain so the emcc and zig
fixtures can be launched on Windows, where extensionless JavaScript shebang
files are not executable through execFileSync. Use a platform-compatible
executable fixture or invoke the scripts through Node while preserving the
builder’s tool contract.

Codex and CodeRabbit on 9851652: when the ATTACH permit cannot be
withdrawn after VACUUM INTO, runVacuumInto closed the AsyncDatabase but
left the module-level asyncDb pointing at it. shouldUseAsyncDatabase only
checks that reference, so later bounded reads went to a closed handle and
failed until the database was reopened. releaseAsyncDatabase now goes
through closeAsyncDatabase for the shared connection, which clears asyncDb
synchronously, so reads fall back to the primary connection. The path is
unreachable with today's binding (permitAttach(null) only throws while the
connection is closing); the regression fails before and passes after.

Builder: resolve --emcc/--zig values containing either separator, since
a forward-slash path on Windows stayed relative and the identity probe
runs from the temp build directory.

Tests: the fake-toolchain builder tests are skipped on win32 with a reason.
The builder shells out to make, tar and unzip, and the fake tools are
shebang scripts; CI runs on Linux.
- Bound the runtime ATTACH refusal text like every other worker error.
Joining the refusal with each wrapped failure could exceed the 8 KiB
IPC limit several times over; the regression fails before and passes
  after.
- CHANGELOG lists CVE-2025-6965 (integer overflow reachable through SQL)
among the WebAssembly engine's fixes alongside the FTS5 CVEs.
- Correct the leading-verb check's whitespace comment: SQLite's tokenizer
rejects \v as illegal, so skipping it only refuses statements SQLite
would not run. Behaviour is unchanged.
- SQL-escape the read-only path in the native smoke ATTACH case.
- Drop the builder's second resolution of the emcc path; tool paths are
resolved once. A rebuild changes only the builder's manifest hash.
Only CVE-2025-7709 has "complete control over the database content" as
its precondition. CVE-2026-11822/11824 require running SQL while
defensive mode is off (both engines leave it off), and CVE-2025-6965
requires running SQL. A crafted file reaching 11822/11824 on its own is
unverified, so the release notes no longer claim it.

- runVacuumInto calls run through a promise, so a synchronous throw
  still withdraws the ATTACH permit.
- releaseAsyncDatabase closes a non-shared connection through a promise,
so a synchronous or throwing close is reported instead of replacing
  the failure its caller throws.
- execBatch keeps both errors when savepoint cleanup fails, so a runtime
ATTACH refusal keeps its ERR_NATIVE_SQL_ATTACH_BLOCKED code.
- The release test runs the real releaseAsyncDatabase and
closeAsyncDatabase over one shared asyncDb binding.
- CHANGELOG: the runtime rule allows only a running export's snapshot
  file.
Lockfile regenerated on dev: 182 packages leave the dev tree, none added. The six VSIX packages contain the same files and bytes as with 3.9.2, except the devDependency version in the bundled package.json. Node 22 baseline; CI and release use Node 24.
