Tracking issue: #1398

Part of the file-write-safety series (#1375) — B2: per-task change journal. Stacked on #1404 (B1, per-write checkpoints).

What

  • Append-only changes.jsonl under the task's checkpoint dir — one entry per successful file write: path, operation, checkpointId (the B1 checkpoint id), and diffStats (additions/deletions from the already-computed approval diff where available).
  • Torn-tail repair on load — a crash mid-append leaves a truncated final line; loading discards it, parses the rest, and never throws, so the journal survives a crash with no corrupt load.
  • Gated by perWriteCheckpoints — the B1 master switch: off = no journal entries, writes behave exactly as today.

Tests

  • changeJournal.spec.ts — append format (one JSON line per entry), clean-tail load, torn-tail repair (truncated final line discarded, rest parsed, no throw), absent/empty journal → [].
  • Hook-level: a successful write through the B1 hook appends exactly one journal line referencing the B1 checkpoint id; with the setting off no line is appended.
  • Regression: the B1 suites (write/edit/applyPatch hooks, Task, ClineProvider) stay green.
  • Local gates: eslint 0, tsc 0, 100% patch coverage.

Hardening (post-review)

  • Partial flush on mid-patch failure — when a later hunk is rejected (a .rooignore access denial), the loop breaks instead of returning, so writes completed by earlier hunks still receive the B1 checkpoint, the journal entry, and the change card; the failed patch also keeps the consecutive-mistake counter from resetting.
  • Failed-move journaling — if a move's destination file is written but the source deletion fails, the move is reported as a failed tool error while the destination write is still journaled and checkpointed, so that state stays restorable.
  • Regression tests: "checkpoints the written subset when a later hunk is access-denied" and the updated failed-move test (the checkpoint covers exactly the destination write).

Content source of record

kind: branch - feat/change-journal-b2, refreshed onto current main by merge 1d2373d80 (upstream/main 9c069e94ef); formatting-only follow-up 86f41828b.

Budget (own delta at this head)

Own delta vs the B1 head (b01a334e4): 11 files, +1026 / -70. The GitHub stacked view is larger until B1 merges; merge order: B1 (PR 1404) first.

How to test

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals --no-file-parallelism core/checkpoints/__tests__/changeJournal.spec.ts core/checkpoints/__tests__/checkpointJournal.test.ts core/tools/__tests__/writeToFileTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/editFileTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
node scripts/find-missing-translations.js

Expected: all green; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.

Verification at this head (182f4b077)

  • CI: 19/19 checks green at head (incl. compile with the new format:check step).
  • Local: ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on all 14 touched src files; tsc --noEmit clean; src vitest 500 passed / 5 skipped / 0 failed (7 files); webview-ui vitest 27 passed (2 files); post-format re-run of the four reformatted spec files: 88 passed / 5 skipped / 0 failed; translations check clean; model-check 9/10 locally (10th = known local Node 25 + tsx env defect only; green in CI).
  • Prettier: clean on every file in the unit diff. src/eslint-suppressions.json: unchanged.

Updated this round (refresh onto main 9c069e94ef)

  • 1d2373d80 - merge upstream/main. Same two test-file conflicts as B1; the ClineProvider.spec.ts pre-merge blob is byte-identical to B1's, so B1's resolution was reused verbatim (both sides' tests kept); ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx takes main's DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS placeholder shape and keeps the perWriteCheckpoints key.
  • 86f41828b - formatting-only: upstream main added a pnpm format:check step to the compile job (new gate); five files in this diff predate the gate and were reformatted with prettier --write (no semantic change; tests re-run green). The same fix was ported to every sibling unit carrying these files.
  • ba5908ba2 - review follow-up (ported from PR 1404): task-start baseline is now skipped on history resumes (initiateTaskLoop gates on _isHistoryTask), matching the exactly-once-per-task design; regression test added in Task.spec.ts. Task.spec 177/177 green, tsc clean, Prettier clean.
  • 650382328 - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): baseline skipped on already-aborted tasks (regression test added; Task.spec 178/178), and WriteToFileTool/EditFileTool now read perWriteCheckpoints through the shared DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS constant. tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • e443eb8bc - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): the baseline block rechecks this.abort after the getState() lookup, so cancellation during the deferred state lookup skips the baseline save; regression test added (Task.spec 179/179, negative control verified). tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • 4c0bc15bc - review follow-up (ported from PR 1404): EditFileTool now awaits checkpointSave before the diff-state reset and queued-work handoff (fire-and-forget could race the commit and lose it at shutdown); held-promise regression test added (negative control verified). Tool specs 102 passed / 5 skipped, tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • 7b85cf223 - port: aborted tasks no longer dequeue queued messages (handoff sites guarded at the Task layer after the awaited-checkpoint change); regression test added. Task spec 180 passed.
  • 82639ccd5 - Stryker-directive sweep: removed the seven carried // Stryker disable next-line comments in Task.ts's streaming/telemetry region (comment-only). Equivalences: event.name always a string on those paths; streamingKey never undefined there; getStreamingKey fallback unreachable defensive code. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean.
  • a3fb016db - refresh onto upstream/main (58341d8 lint cleanup) and fix the unused-variable fallout the merge exposed: dropped the unused ChangeJournalEntry import in the checkpoint index and renamed an unused test stub arg (_uri). Full-src eslint 0, tsc 0, journal spec 8 passed, Prettier clean.

Review-gate re-trigger (2026-08-30): empty commit 7b83143 (no code change) re-runs CI and CodeRabbit current-head review under the org new PR review gate; the code head remains 93a8329.

Visual regression note (2026-08-30): The advisory extension-host-visual check (chat-dark sidebar snapshot) fails on this branch with a deterministic 973-pixel delta localized to the completion-result area. Root cause: the B1 task-start baseline checkpoint (per-write checkpoints default on, allowEmpty) adds a suppressed checkpoint_saved row to the message history, which getCompletionCheckpoint() picks up, so SeeNewChangesButtons render below the completion row; the suite baseline (recorded pre-FWS in #1426) has no such buttons. Every other pixel is identical, and the delta is pixel-identical across all branches containing B1 (1404/1406/1410/1411/1412/1413), while non-B1 branches are green. This is a new-expected-behavior vs stale-baseline mismatch rather than a rendering regression. Flagged for maintainers: either update the electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png baseline on the B1 branch or adjust the scene/component behavior. Advisory check only — it does not block the required gates.

  • loadChanges now validates the runtime shape of every parsed journal line and skips non-entry-shaped JSON (torn append leaving a bare number or null, manual edits, missing string path/checkpointId, unknown operation), per the review thread; regression test covers a torn-but-valid line plus four other malformed shapes (negative control: reverting the check reddens exactly that test). eslint/tsc/Prettier clean.
  • Refreshed onto upstream/main (tool-call state scoping): ToolCallbacks gained a required toolCallId; the execute spec's callback fixtures pass it (test-tool-call-id, matching main's own spec convention). No production-code change. Full-src eslint 0, tsc 0, execute/journal/Task specs 226 passed.
  • Doc/test-name-only commit: the journal entry contract comment now describes the written-subset journaling of partially failed patches, and the execute-spec describe block is renamed to match the subset-checkpoint tests it contains. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean, spec 26 passed.

Persistence Integrity walkthrough row - fixed

appendChange now (1) repairs a torn tail - an unterminated final line is terminated before the new entry is appended, so a crash-truncated journal no longer splices the next entry into the fragment and lose both - and (2) fsyncs each append, so a durable checkpoint implies a durable journal entry. Regression tests: append-after-torn-tail loads both the prior valid entry and the new entry; clean-tail appends insert no blank line. Negative control: disabling the tail repair reddens exactly the torn-tail test (1 failed / 23 passed), restored byte-exact.

The proposed whole-file atomic-rename/serialization redesign is not adopted: the journal is advisory metadata (rollback reads checkpoint commits; loadChanges tolerates malformed lines by design), per-append fsync removes the durability gap, and whole-file replacement would trade the single-syscall append for an O(n) read-modify-write on every write.

  • Review follow-up on the journal hardening: the tail-inspection catch now suppresses only ENOENT (fresh journal) and propagates other stat/open/read errors, and the append loops on FileHandle.write until the whole record is written before syncing (a short write can no longer persist a torn entry under a reported success). Two regression tests; negative controls each redden exactly their test, byte-exact restore. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean, checkpoints suites green.

65-87: Concurrent appends for the same task can interleave the tail check and the write.

appendChange reads the last byte and then opens the file with "a" in a separate step. Two calls for one task can both see a clean tail. One call can then write a partial record before the other appends, which splices the two lines together. checkpointSave appends in sequence within one save. Two overlapping saves, such as a tool save and the task-start baseline, are not serialized by any code shown here. The baseline passes no write value, so it never appends. No concurrent appender is established, so this is not a defect.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression remains unresolved. The PR changes SettingsView.tsx to persist perWriteCheckpoints in updateSettings and pass it to CheckpointSettings, but it does not change SettingsView.spec.tsx. The existing fallback test at lines 462-488 does not assert the new unset/default, true, or false payload behavior. CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx tests only the child checkbox. The durable settings UI change has no Playwright settings component snapshot or settings visual scenario. The only changed image is the unrelated electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png.

Resolution

Add focused SettingsView tests for unset/default, explicit true, and explicit false values in the updateSettings payload, and verify that the checkpoint tab passes the value to CheckpointSettings. Add a Playwright settings component snapshot or settings scenario that captures the new checkbox, with its required reference image.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The prior initialization race remains in changed code. initiateTaskLoop still starts void getCheckpointService(this) at line 3749, then the new task-start baseline calls await this.checkpointSave(true, true) at line 3765. checkpointSave calls getCheckpointService again. The first call creates a service and sets checkpointServiceInitializing at lines 115-117, but assigns task.checkpointService only at line 118. Its initialize listener clears the flag at lines 162-165, and initShadowGit emits that event before the assignment. If the delayed getState() lookup completes in that window, the second call sees no service and a cleared flag, then creates and initializes a second service for the same task and checkpoint directory. This duplicates initialization work and leaves the losing service without task ownership or disposal.

Resolution

Make checkpoint initialization single-flight. Store an in-flight initialization promise before the first await and return it from every caller, including the task-start baseline. Assign the service before clearing the initialization state, or otherwise keep the state consistent until assignment completes. On initialization failure and task disposal, remove checkpoint listeners and dispose or cancel any service and in-flight initialization so no unowned service can continue after the task ends.

Use one shared default for the setting.

Define the perWriteCheckpoints default once in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, then import and use it in ClineProvider and the webview's initial extension state. Keeping a duplicate provider constant and a hardcoded webview true can make default behavior diverge after a future default change.

strings by replacing “każłdym” with “każdym” in both the label and description
values.

“успешной записи файла”, preserving the rest of the text.

Nitpick comments:
In `@packages/types/src/global-settings.ts`:
- Around line 102-107: Remove the duplicate DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS
declaration from ClineProvider and import the shared constant from
global-settings.ts. Keep the shared definition in global-settings.ts as the
single source of truth for both settings UI and task behavior.

Apply the same fix in `@webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx` at line
214: The initial webview state hardcodes the setting default instead of using
the shared constant.

In `@src/core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts`:
- Around line 81-85: Update the providerRef fixtures in the affected tests to
use precise test-double types instead of unnecessary as unknown as
Task["providerRef"] assertions; if either double assertion is required, retain
it and add a nearby comment explaining why the mock cannot satisfy the concrete
Task member types.

In `@webview-ui/src/components/settings/CheckpointSettings.tsx`:
- Around line 45-46: Replace the explicit any types in CheckpointSettings,
including the perWriteCheckpoints checkbox handler, with a precise checkbox
change-event type and narrow mock prop/event types. Update
CheckpointSettings.tsx lines 45-46 and CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx lines 24-56

Assert the journaled path for a successful move.

The test verifies writeFile content and one checkpointSave call. It does not verify the journal payload. The tool maps a move to change.movePath for the entry path. Add that assertion so a regression in the destination mapping fails here.

As per coding guidelines, add focused tests for persistence or normalization.

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Awaiting fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval.

Automated review is complete for the latest commit but does not replace human approval.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

…callbacks

Main now scopes tool state to each tool call: ToolCallbacks gained a
required toolCallId. The execute spec's callback fixtures pass the
new field (test-tool-call-id, matching main's own spec convention).
No production-code change needed for this unit.
The toolCallId insertions pushed several tool.execute call sites past
the print width; Prettier reflows them.

Comment thread src/core/checkpoints/changeJournal.ts
Comment thread src/core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts Outdated
…ehavior

ApplyPatchTool journals the written subset when a later hunk
fails, so the ChangeJournalEntry doc comment no longer claims
fully-successful-patch-only, and the execute-spec describe block
is renamed to match the tests it contains.
A crash can leave the journal without a trailing newline; the
next append previously spliced the new entry into the fragment
and lost both at load time. appendChange now terminates a torn
tail before appending and fsyncs each append so a durable
checkpoint implies a durable journal entry. Task IDs are
validated as a single path segment before any filesystem
operation so a crafted ID cannot move the journal outside
<globalStorageDir>/tasks.
… writes

appendChange previously swallowed every tail-inspection error,
so an I/O failure could let the append proceed without the
required separator and silently lose the entry to a merged
line; only ENOENT (fresh journal) is suppressed now. The
append also ignored FileHandle.write's bytesWritten, so a
partial write became a durable torn record reported as
success; the loop now writes the whole record before syncing.
Regression tests cover both paths.
