Tracking issue: #1402

Part of the file-write-safety series (#1375) — B3b: change cards webview UI + rollback buttons (the changeCardDetail settings control ships in B3a, PR 1411). Stacked on B3c (which stacks B3a).

What

  • Change cards in the chat UI — a new ChangeCard component renders the B3a per-step card payloads wherever chat messages render: header "N file(s) changed this step", per-file rows with path + green/red +N/-N badges, and the diff straight from the payload's per-file diff field (no extra diff-fetch message). changeCardDetail "summary" (default) keeps diffs collapsed with a per-file expand toggle; "full" expands the inline unified diff by default; compact/auto-approved cards (host emits summary without diff) render without a diff section but keep the rollback controls.
  • Rollback buttons — per-file and per-step rollback, wired end to end: new typed webview→extension messages (checkpointRollbackFile / checkpointRollbackStep, zod-validated in webviewMessageHandler) call the B3c rollback service (rollbackFile / rollbackStep); the extension replies with a checkpointRollbackResult correlated by the card's message timestamp. UI states: idle → confirm (with warning) → pending → success/error, at both per-file and step level.
  • changeCardDetail settings control — the settings-view control for the B3a setting (cachedState binding + handleSubmit payload + binding tests). The control itself ships in B3a (PR 1411) as part of the persisted-setting round trip (checklist requires control + binding + save payload + locales in the setting's PR); this unit inherits it - its own delta is the chat card UI and rollback buttons. An earlier note here claiming the control was moved out of B3a was stale and has been corrected.
  • i18n — the 10 chat:changeCard.* keys translated into all 18 locale files (en + 17). En-only was evaluated and rejected: the repo's check-translations parity check fails on en-only keys (verified), so full-locale parity is required for a green CI.

Budget note

Raw diff: 1300 insertions / 1 deletion — 300 lines over the series' 1000-line hard cap. Breakdown: 216 i18n parity lines (CI check-translations mandated, all 18 locales), 120 pre-staged settings-control lines moved in from the B3a split, 621 ChangeCard component + spec, 287 webview→extension rollback channel (message types + handler + spec), 53 shared types, 3 ChatRow wiring. The two mandated/moved components alone (336) plus the rollback channel (287) leave 677 of B3b-authored card UI. If the maintainers prefer strict per-PR caps, this can be re-split (cards+control / rollback UI+channel) — flagging here rather than unilaterally reworking.

Tests

  • webview-ui (narrowest layer): ChangeCard.spec.tsx (12 tests: multi-file render, summary lazy-diff expand, full inline-by-default, compact card without diff, rollback button posts the right message, pending/success/error states, cardTs correlation ignores foreign results); settings control binding + save payload; full webview suite green (162 files / 1781 tests).
  • src: webviewMessageHandler.rollback.spec.ts (6 tests: file rollback success/error/invalid/no-task; step rollback success/partial-failure/invalid); tsc 0 in src and webview-ui.
  • Local gates: eslint 0 (webview + src + types), 100% patch coverage on changed lines, prettier --check clean on all committed files, i18n parity green (check-translations).

Update (CodeRabbit-sync from trial #1413): head 0e021ef96 — ChangeCard resolves the rollback step from a correlated result that carries neither filePath nor files (missing-task shape); flex-grow -> Tailwind v4 grow; checkpoints-changeCardDetail is a sibling SearchableSetting; Catalan rollbackFailed corrected (trial addendum 178e6f4). Review context: trial PR #1413.

Update (User-feedback-sync from trial #1413): head 502f8ca98 (7f6d136 + CodeRabbit a11y fix: the compact-row open-file control is now a native Button with a focused spec asserting the native-button contract, so keyboard users can activate it; + CodeRabbit typing round: VSCodeCheckbox change events typed via Event | FormEvent with a narrow checked-state narrowing, and the settings spec doubles are fully typed instead of any) (7f6d136 + CodeRabbit a11y fix: the compact-row open-file control is now a native Button with a focused spec asserting the native-button contract, so keyboard users can activate it) - User-feedback addendum (trial #1413 review): change cards now carry a per-file open-in-editor control (codicon-link-external on both the diff row via CodeAccordion and the no-diff row), posting the existing openFile webview message with ./ normalization (same contract as FileChangesPanel). changeCard.openFile i18n key added to all 18 locales; 2 new spec tests. (trial: #1413)

Update (rollback semantic correction + forward restore, #1435): head 9a430d6cd - this PR is now stacked on the B3c correction 630f273ca (pre-step rollbacks; see #1410 for the service-side detail). UI changes: (1) a new per-file Restore latest version control with two-step confirm and warning text (the forward direction - restore the file to its most recent recorded write; a task that never wrote it is a no-op success); (2) a new typed webview message checkpointRestoreLatestFile plus handler case, routed through the existing checkpointRollbackResult shape - per-file results now carry a kind ("restore-latest" vs absent = rollback), so the two controls never cross-talk and legacy results still route; (3) the per-file rollback confirm now shows the warning text (previously only the step confirm did), and the copy now describes the actual pre-step behavior; (4) i18n: 5 new/updated chat:changeCard.* keys in all 18 locales. Specs: ChangeCard.spec.tsx +5 tests (restore-latest confirm -> post -> pending -> success, no-op success, error state, control-routing separation, cancel); handler spec +4 (restore-latest success/no-op/error/no-task). Increment over the previous head: 27 files, +929/-150 (includes the B3c service files arriving via the stack). Tracking: #1435.

Update (CodeRabbit review round): head ea90ea895 (a0693e9e4 + ea90ea895) — all review findings fixed: (1) the three rollback/restore handler cases post correlated failure results when the lazy import, journal read, or git restore throws, so a card can no longer sit pending forever; (2) the no-active-task results post localized copy (common:errors.message.no_active_task_to_roll_back / _restore, all 18 extension locales) instead of hardcoded English; (3) the change-card error states are focusable status elements (role=status, tabIndex=0, aria-label = the actual error), so the error detail is reachable without a pointer; (4) the compact-row open-file control's aria-label/title names the target file (openFile gains a {{path}} slot, 18 webview locales); (5) locale corrections: es rollingBack (Revirtiendo...), hi rollbackWarning/openFile, it statuses use restore wording (incl. rollbackFailed aligned to restoreFailed), ko completed statuses are explicit (되돌림 완료 / 단계 되돌림 완료); (6) the spec covers the schema-invalid JSON path (valid {} → empty card) independently of the parse-failure path, and the no-files success test name now matches what it asserts. Local gates: tsc 0, eslint 0, 100% of changed lines covered; ubuntu CI green; git merge-tree clean vs upstream/main.

Review-gate re-trigger (2026-08-30): empty commit 63dcd24 (no code change) re-runs CI and CodeRabbit current-head review under the org new PR review gate; the code head remains ea90ea8.

Addendum 12 (2026-08-30 05:58Z): empty commit ab281f51 to re-trigger the flaky ubuntu unit run (vitest worker teardown false positive, no code change); the trial install artifact is unchanged.

Visual regression note (2026-08-30): The advisory extension-host-visual check (chat-dark sidebar snapshot) fails on this branch with a deterministic 973-pixel delta localized to the completion-result area. Root cause: the B1 task-start baseline checkpoint (per-write checkpoints default on, allowEmpty) adds a suppressed checkpoint_saved row to the message history, which getCompletionCheckpoint() picks up, so SeeNewChangesButtons render below the completion row; the suite baseline (recorded pre-FWS in #1426) has no such buttons. Every other pixel is identical, and the delta is pixel-identical across all branches containing B1 (1404/1406/1410/1411/1412/1413), while non-B1 branches are green. This is a new-expected-behavior vs stale-baseline mismatch rather than a rendering regression. Flagged for maintainers: either update the electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png baseline on the B1 branch or adjust the scene/component behavior. Advisory check only — it does not block the required gates.

Content source of record

kind: branch - feat/change-cards-ui-b3b, refreshed onto current main by merge 354a8a381 (upstream/main 9c069e94ef); formatting-only follow-up 03d35bac5.

Budget (own delta at this head)

Own delta vs the B3c head (25190f8fa): 46 files, +2083 / -92. The GitHub stacked view is larger until B1/B2/B3a/B3c merge; merge order: B1 (PR 1404), B2 (PR 1406), B3a (PR 1411), B3c (PR 1410), then this PR.

How to test

pnpm --dir webview-ui exec vitest run --globals src/components/chat/__tests__/ChangeCard.spec.tsx src/components/settings/__tests__/CheckpointSettings.spec.tsx src/components/settings/__tests__/SettingsView.spec.tsx src/context/__tests__/ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals --no-file-parallelism core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.rollback.spec.ts core/checkpoints/__tests__/rollback.spec.ts
node scripts/find-missing-translations.js

Expected: all green; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.

Verification at this head (0558c2ad9)

  • CI: all required checks green at head (check-translations, platform-unit-test ubuntu+windows, compile with the new format:check step, knip, e2e-mock, Build test VSIX). mutation-diff (advisory) is red: this stacked branch's aggregate diff exceeds the mutation budget - a chain-topology reading, documented here and in the budget note above; it clears as the lower units merge. The has-conflicts label is stale - the PR is mergeable against main.
  • Local: ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on all 24 touched src files; tsc --noEmit clean; src vitest 609 passed / 5 skipped / 0 failed (12 files); webview-ui vitest 83 passed (4 files); translations check clean; model-check 9/10 locally (10th = known local Node 25 + tsx env defect only; green in CI).
  • Prettier: clean on every file in the unit diff. src/eslint-suppressions.json: unchanged.

Updated this round (refresh onto main 9c069e94ef)

  • 354a8a381 - merge upstream/main. The two test-file conflicts had pre-merge blobs identical to B3c's, so B3c's resolutions were reused verbatim (all three test groups kept; main's DEFAULT_WRITE_DELAY_MS placeholder shape + the setting keys).
  • 03d35bac5 - formatting-only: the new format:check gate flagged three files in this diff; reformatted with prettier --write, byte-parity with the B3c/B3a fixes verified via git hash-object.
  • d125039af - review follow-up (ported from PR 1404): task-start baseline is now skipped on history resumes (initiateTaskLoop gates on _isHistoryTask), matching the exactly-once-per-task design; regression test added in Task.spec.ts. Task.spec 177/177 green, tsc clean, Prettier clean.
  • f1cbb2d2b - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): baseline skipped on already-aborted tasks (regression test added; Task.spec 178/178), and WriteToFileTool/EditFileTool now read perWriteCheckpoints through the shared DEFAULT_PER_WRITE_CHECKPOINTS constant. tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • 2330d755a - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): the baseline block rechecks this.abort after the getState() lookup, so cancellation during the deferred state lookup skips the baseline save; regression test added (Task.spec 179/179, negative control verified). tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • 2330d755a - review follow-up (ported from PR 1410): restoreFile containment now validated on the deepest existing ancestor for every target (nonexistent targets could otherwise be written through a symlinked ancestor by the checkout branch); regression test included (specs 70/70, tsc clean, eslint clean).
  • d2e148cb5 - empty commit: CI retrigger only, no code change. The previous head's platform-unit-test (windows-latest) failed on an infrastructure flake in packages/core (worktree-include.integration.spec.ts: "Failed to copy node_modules: robocopy failed with code 16" - a runner-side robocopy runtime error; the same job is green on ubuntu and on every prior head of this chain, and this chain does not touch packages/core). Actions re-run endpoints require repo admin for both contributor tokens, so the documented fallback (empty commit) re-runs all checks at this head.
  • 38aef308d / e4fe6bacf - review follow-ups (ported from PR 1410): containment walk uses fs.lstat so dangling symlink ancestors are rejected instead of skipped, and restoreFile enforces its single-regular-file contract (directory targets rejected; checkpoint entry verified as a regular-file blob via ls-tree). Regression tests included; specs 73/73, tsc clean, eslint clean.
  • 6ee6d0482 - review follow-up (both new threads fixed and resolved): (1) fileExistsInCommit no longer treats a cat-file -e failure as absence - a corrupt/missing checkpoint tree object previously routed restoreFile into the delete branch and removed a live file; existence now comes from ls-tree with the :(literal) pathspec (empty success = absent, command failure propagates), byte-identical to the owning unit's 4dcb8d9ca; regression test corrupts the tree object and pins the rejection plus the surviving file (negative control verified). (2) Russian stepRolledBack corrected: "Шаг откатен" -> "Шаг откачен" (standard passive matching "Step rolled back"); no other locale uses the non-standard form. Service spec 48/48, tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean.
  • c636ae721 - empty commit retrigger: extension-host-visual failed on 6ee6d0482 with a 2855-pixel (ratio 0.02) anti-aliasing/ghosting drift on the EN chat sidebar screenshot (electron-chat-dark-sidebar.png). Not this diff: the same branch passed the job two hours earlier; the sibling unit carrying the identical service change passed it minutes later; two unrelated branches failed the same job in the same window; and this PR's diff touches no EN webview code (backend service + backend spec + one ru locale value). The job is advisory (the Protect Main ruleset carries no required_status_checks rule; extension-host-visual is not in the required set). Recorded per the documented infra-flake retrigger path.
  • 40bd53a48 - review follow-up (raised on PR 1410): the checkout pathspec in restoreFile now uses the :(literal) magic like the ls-tree lookups - a filename containing glob characters ([a].ts) previously acted as a character class and could restore the wrong or extra files, breaking the single-file restore contract. Regression test checkpoints [a].ts alongside a.ts and pins the exact-path restore (negative control verified). Service spec 49/49, tsc clean, eslint clean, Prettier clean. Byte-copied to the sibling unit (af18969 on PR 1410).
  • aa7f9e4b7 - review follow-up (queued-message handoff, raised on PR 1404): the per-file handlers processed queued messages before execute awaited the whole-patch checkpoint, so a queued turn (and its own checkpointed writes) could start mid-commit. The handoff is now deferred to after the checkpoint attempt - one handoff per successful patch, independent of the checkpoint setting or outcome - matching the deferral the journal-carrying unit already shipped. Tests: held-promise deferral (negative control verified), handoff with checkpoints disabled, no handoff on failure. Tool specs green, tsc/eslint/Prettier clean.
  • 93a9b657c - port: aborted tasks no longer dequeue queued messages (handoff sites guarded at the Task layer after the awaited-checkpoint change); regression test added. Task spec 180 passed.

Review dispositions (registered once)

  • Persistence Integrity (rollback row at 93a9b65, walkthrough 05:46Z): stale analysis. The row cites task.processQueuedMessages() inside the per-file handlers at ApplyPatchTool.ts:352/424/619 - those three calls were removed at head aa7f9e4 (queued-message handoff deferred to a single post-checkpoint hook, with the ordering test); the current head has exactly one call site, after the awaited whole-patch checkpoint and journal/card work. The serialization half of the row (serialize per-task checkpoint saves across callers) is the registered journal-persistence family (same HOLD posture as the journal unit's registered rows).
  • 23928ae32 - Stryker-directive sweep: removed the seven carried // Stryker disable next-line comments in Task.ts's streaming/telemetry region plus two in the webview message handler's encoding-recovery path (comment-only). Equivalences: event.name always a string on those paths; streamingKey never undefined there; getStreamingKey fallback unreachable defensive code; hostile non-stabilizing encodings are pinned by the directory tests. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean, webview message handler spec 82 passed.
  • abb6a4a3d - refresh onto upstream/main (58341d8 lint cleanup) and fix the unused-variable fallout the merge exposed: dropped the unused ChangeJournalEntry import in the checkpoint index, renamed unused test stub arg (_uri) and two unused positional destructures (_partial, _sayOptions) in the checkpoint-save spec. Full-src eslint 0, tsc 0, checkpoint specs 16 passed, Prettier clean. Note: the advisory mutation-diff job fails at this lineage's heads (also at 6ee6d04/c636ae721/93a9b657c, i.e. predating this round's changes) with gate-side report noise - a survived-BooleanLiteral advisory at packages/core/src/value.ts (a path that exists in neither main nor this branch) and, at the current head, an EISDIR failure writing the gate's own job summary; none of the reported items cite this branch's code, and mutation-diff is not a required check.
  • Refreshed onto upstream/main (tool-call state scoping): ToolCallbacks gained a required toolCallId; the execute spec's callback fixtures pass it (test-tool-call-id, matching main's own spec convention). No production-code change. Full-src eslint 0, tsc 0, webview tsc 0, execute/checkpoint/Task/message-handler specs 318 passed.
  • Change-card emission is now skipped when the writes array is empty (a no-op patch still checkpoints; unrelated workspace changes can produce the commit, and a zero-file card would misrender), per the review thread; the no-op tool test asserts the empty payload and a new emission-layer test covers the guard (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test). eslint/tsc/Prettier clean, specs 38 passed.

Persistence Integrity walkthrough row - fixed

Torn-tail repair + per-append fsync in appendChange (negative control: disabling the repair reddens exactly the torn-tail test, restored byte-exact). A torn append is now always the final line at crash time, the next append terminates it, and later entries stay intact; fsync removes the lost-flush window so tearing requires a crash during the write itself.

The remaining claims are answered by existing fail-closed behavior rather than the proposed redesign: a journal that cannot be read yields "Change journal could not be read" with no restore performed (rollback.ts loadTaskJournal; rollback.spec.ts asserts restoreFile is not called), and a file with no journal entry yields the no-entry error instead of silently selecting an older entry. Middle-line corruption is indistinguishable from a torn tail without whole-file replacement; skipping malformed lines is the documented tolerance of the advisory journal, and the checkpoint commits remain the authoritative restore source.

  • Review follow-up on the journal hardening: the tail-inspection catch now suppresses only ENOENT (fresh journal) and propagates other stat/open/read errors, and the append loops on FileHandle.write until the whole record is written before syncing (a short write can no longer persist a torn entry under a reported success). Two regression tests; negative controls each redden exactly their test, byte-exact restore. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean, checkpoints suites green.
  • Persistence Integrity row - implemented as demanded: journal updates are now one serialized (per-task queue), atomic replacement per checkpoint - read current journal, repair a torn tail, write the complete next content to a temp file, fsync it, atomically rename onto changes.jsonl, and fsync the parent directory (POSIX; Windows cannot open directories). checkpointSave persists the whole step's writes in that single update and propagates journal failures instead of reporting a fully durable checkpoint with lost entries; the change card is emitted only after the journal update is durable. Save failures keep the historical handler (logged, checkpoints disabled, resolves undefined). Failure-injection tests: post-commit journal failure (no card, checkpoints stay enabled), mid-update rename failure (all-or-nothing journal, temp file cleaned up), concurrent-update serialization (no lost updates), restart recovery from a stale temp file plus torn tail, and empty updates. Negative controls: dropping the propagation, the queue, the temp cleanup, or the directory sync each reddens exactly one test (12 NCs across the series), restored byte-exact. eslint/tsc/Prettier clean; checkpoints suites and the apply-patch execution suite green.

Persistence Integrity row (04:12 walkthrough) - implemented as demanded

  • checkpointSave now serializes the COMPLETE per-task checkpoint
transaction (staging + commit + journal replacement + card) under the
shared per-task lock, so the existing background caller (Task.ts
void this.checkpointSave(false, true)) is awaited by every later
write before that write's transaction proceeds.
  • loadChanges rejects malformed middle records (unparseable or
non-entry-shaped) and accepts only a verified final torn tail after
truncation; appendChanges truncates the torn tail instead of
    preserving it.
  • Rollback fails explicitly when journal completeness is unknown: the
load rejection surfaces as the existing "Change journal could not be
    read" fail-closed error.
  • WriteToFileTool no longer swallows journal failures; its successful
result is emitted only after persistence succeeded.
  • Negative controls: dropping the lock, lenient middle-line parse or
shape handling, reverting truncation, and re-adding the tool catch
each made exactly one test red; all restored byte-exact.

Review follow-up wave (head 0558c2ad9)

  • changeJournal durability (ported to all three journal units, same converged code):
    • Windows rename retry: transient EPERM/EBUSY/EACCES rename rejections on win32 are retried (up to 5 attempts, 20ms x attempt backoff); the destination is never unlinked, POSIX behavior unchanged.
    • Complete-record preservation: an unterminated final line that parses as an entry-shaped record is kept and re-terminated (shared isEntryShaped predicate with loadChanges); only true fragments are truncated.
    • Directory-sync errno tolerance: EINVAL/EISDIR/EBADF/ENOTSUP/EOPNOTSUPP/EPERM on the post-rename directory sync are logged as reduced crash durability (the rename already replaced the journal); genuine I/O failures still propagate.
  • Success-after-persistence + finally handoff: WriteToFileTool and EditFileTool emit success results only after the checkpoint + journal persistence succeeded; ApplyPatchTool buffers per-file success results until the post-patch checkpoint persists (failure results stay immediate); the queued-message handoff runs from finally whenever the file write itself succeeded, so a journal persistence failure surfaces as an explicit tool failure without stranding the queue.
  • The queued-message handoff thread (journal failure stranding the queue) was replied to and resolved here.
  • Tests: five new changeJournal tests (record preservation, win32 retry, POSIX no-retry, EINVAL tolerance, EIO propagation) plus journal-failure tests per tool and buffering ordering/handoff tests for ApplyPatchTool. Negative controls: every mutation turned exactly one test red except two documented cases (flush-before-checkpoint turns the two new ApplyPatchTool tests red; WriteToFileTool finally removal turns the new failure test plus the existing checkpoint-ordering test red - all reds assert the new behavior).
  • Actionable review threads replied to and resolved at this head.

Row-4 checklist wave (2026-08-28)

  • Security row (ChangeCard openFile containment): fixed at 0558c2ad9. Posts tagged values.fromChangeCard; handler enforces lexical + realpath containment plus single best-effort percent-decode for tagged requests. Regression tests: traversal, absolute outside, percent-encoded traversal, symlink escape, literal % filename, marker payload. Negative controls: guard removal -> 4 reds (all new-behavior), decode removal -> 1 red, marker removal -> 2 reds.
  • Persistence row: verified compliant (claims stale). Malformed-tail truncation + complete-record preservation (rounds 28/30), strict loadChanges + fail-closed rollback read (round 29), full-transaction checkpoint lock (round 29), un-swallowed WriteToFileTool journal failure (round 29). Evidence: comment feat(webview): change cards UI and rollback buttons (B3b, #1375) #1412 (comment)
  • Ports the restoreFile git-pathspec fix from the rollback-service unit (byte-identical file).

Row-6 convergence port (2026-08-28)

  • Journal-location fix ported at 0558c2ad9 (from the rollback-service unit; full-transaction lock wrapper kept): write-metadata saves without a stable journal location now fail before committing instead of committing and skipping the journal silently; defensive post-commit CheckpointPartialPersistenceError surfaces the partial state. Regression tests: provider loss during commit (captured location still used), pre-commit failure, baseline compatibility. Negative controls: guard removal -> exactly 1 red; post-commit deref timing -> 3 reds (transaction-serialization test included), all asserting the captured-location contract.

Row-7 review fixes (2026-08-28)

  • PI: saveCheckpoint rejections no longer swallowed for write-metadata saves at 0558c2ad9. The file write has already happened when the commit fails, so the tool must not report success without rollback metadata: write-metadata saves now propagate the failure (checkpoints still disabled, legacy swallow reserved for non-write calls such as the task-start baseline).
  • SB: change cards stay out of cloud task-message capture at 0558c2ad9. Full-detail cards embed raw unified diffs, and task sync captured every non-partial message, so approved writes to secret-bearing files (.env, PII) uploaded file content to the cloud endpoint. change_card messages are now excluded from CloudService.captureEvent in both addToClineMessages and updateClineMessage; cards remain local to the webview.
  • Ported identically from the rollback-service unit (convergence discipline; the full-transaction lock wrapper is unaffected).

Row-8 review fixes (2026-08-28)

  • PI: an unverified final journal record now rejects on read at 0558c2ad9. loadChanges discarded a parse failure on the final line as a torn tail without evidence, so a corrupted final record made rollback report an incomplete history as valid (restore-latest no-oped over the lost write). Torn-tail repair is verified truncation owned by the append path; a read now rejects, so rollbackFile, rollbackStep, and restoreLatestFile surface an explicit failure without restoring. Regression tests: torn final line and entirely torn journal reject at load; corrupt final records fail all three rollback entry points without a restore call. Negative control: restoring the silent discard turns exactly the new-behavior tests red.
  • SB: change-card paths decode to a fixed point at the containment boundary at 0558c2ad9. Card paths were decoded once while openFile decodes again afterwards, so a double-encoded request (./%252e%252e/%252e%252e/.env) passed containment as a literal and escaped only after that later decode. Literal names with a bare percent keep the historical fallback; non-stabilizing encodings reject. Regression test: a double-encoded change-card traversal is rejected before openFile runs. Negative control: reverting to a single decode turns exactly that test red.

Explanation

The description is detailed and on topic. It links the tracking issues, explains the implementation, documents testing, and records known advisory-check results. It does not reproduce every template heading or complete the checklist, but the core required information is present.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The change-card boundary still permits double-encoded traversal. ChangeCard.tsx accepts any file.path and posts it with fromChangeCard. The host decodes a change-card path once, resolves it, and checks containment at webviewMessageHandler.ts:1589-1618. openFile then decodes again at src/integrations/misc/open-file.ts:18-24. For ./%252e%252e/%252e%252e/.env, the checked path is inside the workspace, but the second decode produces /mock/workspace/project/../../.env, which can open a secret file outside the workspace. The current tests cover single encoding but not this changed path.

Resolution

Decode change-card paths to a stable fixed point before resolving and validating them, or make the downstream open operation use the already-validated path without another decode. Reject malformed or non-stabilizing encodings. Add a regression test for double-encoded traversal and verify that openFile receives no outside-workspace target.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The new journal recovery path still reports incomplete history as valid. loadChanges breaks and returns prior entries for any JSON-parse failure on the final line (src/core/checkpoints/changeJournal.ts:260-274), without truncation or evidence that the line is a crash tail. The added test explicitly accepts a completely torn journal as [] (src/core/checkpoints/__tests__/changeJournal.spec.ts:431-438). restoreLatestFile then treats that result as a successful no-op (src/core/checkpoints/rollback.ts:264-274). Scenario: a file write is committed, but its final journal record is truncated or corrupted. A restore-latest request returns success and leaves the current file unchanged instead of reporting that rollback metadata is incomplete. The transaction lock, atomic journal replacement, awaited tool saves, and CheckpointPartialPersistenceError address the earlier commit/journal race and swallowed-failure claims, but this changed rollback path still loses rollback state silently.

Resolution

Do not silently discard an unverified final parse failure. Mark the journal incomplete and return an explicit failure from rollbackFile, rollbackStep, and restoreLatestFile. If torn-tail repair is required, verify and truncate the tail in an explicit recovery operation before treating the journal as readable; otherwise reject it. Add regression tests for a truncated final record and for restore-latest failure without a restore call.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The standing regression findings remain unresolved. The PR adds the durable visible ChangeCard UI (webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChangeCard.tsx, 452 lines), but it adds no ChangeCard.visual.tsx or ChangeCard snapshot. The Playwright component config runs only **/*.visual.tsx, and the changed Electron snapshot covers a completion-only scenario, not a change card. The schema accepts checkpointIds: [] (packages/types/src/message.ts:273-281), while ChangeCard returns null when the first checkpoint ID is absent (ChangeCard.tsx:68,115-117). All ChangeCard fixtures use checkpointIds: ["abc123"]; no focused test covers this schema-valid inert-rendering branch.

Resolution

Add webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ChangeCard.visual.tsx with Playwright component snapshots for representative summary/full cards and rollback-control states. Add a focused unit test for a schema-valid payload with checkpointIds: [] that verifies inert rendering and no rollback messages.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

Checkpoint work remains uncoupled from task cancellation. The changed write paths await checkpointSave in EditFileTool, WriteToFileTool, and ApplyPatchTool. checkpointSave starts saveCheckpoint and then appends journal entries and invokes task.say("change_card", ...) without checking task.abort or disposal state. Task.abortTask() and Task.dispose() only set abort and cancel the HTTP request; they do not cancel, track, or await pending checkpoint work. If a write checkpoint is pending when the task is cancelled and a task with the same ID is rehydrated, the old commit and journal append can complete afterward. The shared task lock serializes this stale work instead of cancelling it. task.say rejects after abort, but the stale checkpoint and journal work still occur, and a race before the guard can still add the card.

Resolution

Make checkpoint work lifecycle-aware. Pass a cancellation/disposal token into checkpointSave; check it before saveCheckpoint, before journal persistence, and before change-card emission. Track pending checkpoint promises on Task and cancel or await them from abortTask() and dispose(). Add a regression test that pauses a write checkpoint, aborts and disposes the task, rehydrates the same task ID, resolves the checkpoint, and verifies that no stale commit metadata, journal entry, or change_card is produced.

Preserve the checkpoint when a later file in the patch is blocked.

When validateAccess rejects a later path, the early return skips checkpointSave for successful earlier writes. Those writes can lack journal entries and rollback coverage. Exit the loop with patchSucceeded = false, then checkpoint non-empty successfulChanges.

Replace any in the test doubles with narrow prop types.

The mocked slider, checkbox, checkbox event, and link use any, which disables type checking in these TypeScript test doubles. Define precise local prop and event types.

Add a case for valid JSON with a missing required field.

This test covers text that is not JSON. It does not cover JSON that parses but omits files or checkpointIds. That shape reaches the unguarded reads flagged in webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChangeCard.tsx. Add the case together with the schema validation so the regression is proven at this layer.

Give the provider double the members checkpointSave actually reads.

checkpointSave reads task.providerRef.deref()?.getState() and calls task.say("change_card", ...) after the journal append. ProviderLike has no getState and TaskLike has no say, so the change-card block throws a TypeError on every write test here and the inner catch swallows it. The suite still passes, but the swallowed failure can mask a later regression, and the assertion at Line 201 matches any console.error call.

Add getState and say to the doubles so the emitted card path runs, or assert explicitly that only the journal path is under test.

restoreFile verifies the checkpoint object (rev-parse --verify; simple-git raw() resolves silently when git exits non-zero without stderr, so cat-file -e would have read a missing checkpoint as present) before the exists-at-commit lookup, and rejects with Checkpoint unavailable instead of deleting the selected file. When the restore target file exists, both the workspace root and the target are fs.realpath-resolved and containment is re-checked, so a link inside the workspace pointing outside it is rejected before any mutation. Regressions: unavailable checkpoint keeps the live file; symlinked ancestor is rejected (POSIX). (CodeRabbit security finding on trial Zoo-Code-Org#1413).

Add a schema-invalid persisted payload test.

This test covers JSON parsing failure only. Add a valid JSON payload that fails changeCardSchema and assert that the component renders nothing. This proves the Zod validation path that protects persisted history records.

As per coding guidelines, “Add focused tests for UI binding and save behavior, persistence or normalization.”

In `@webview-ui/src/components/settings/CheckpointSettings.tsx`:
- Around line 52-53: Update both VSCodeCheckbox onChange handlers in
CheckpointSettings, including the handlers near setCachedStateField calls, to
use Event instead of any; narrow currentTarget to an appropriate checked-bearing
element before reading its boolean checked value and updating cached state.

Nitpick comments:
In `@webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ChangeCard.spec.tsx`:
- Around line 147-153: Add a focused test alongside the existing
unparseable-payload case for ChangeCard: pass valid JSON in the message text
that violates changeCardSchema, then assert the rendered container is empty.
Keep the test targeted to the schema-validation path for persisted history
records.

…callbacks

Main now scopes tool state to each tool call: ToolCallbacks gained a
required toolCallId. The execute spec's callback fixtures pass the
new field (test-tool-call-id, matching main's own spec convention).
No production-code change needed for this unit.

Pre-merge checks failed. Please resolve the failing checks before merging.

A no-op patch still reaches checkpointSave with an empty writes
array, and unrelated workspace changes can produce the commit;
emitting a card for it would show a change card with zero files.
Skip emission when the writes array is empty (the checkpoint
itself still runs), assert the empty payload in the no-op tool
test, and cover the guard at the emission layer.
Port of the sibling-unit fix: a crash can leave the journal
without a trailing newline; the next append previously spliced
the new entry into the fragment and lost both at load time.
appendChange now terminates a torn tail before appending and
fsyncs each append so a durable checkpoint implies a durable
journal entry. Task IDs are validated as a single path segment
before any filesystem operation so a crafted ID cannot move the
journal outside <globalStorageDir>/tasks.
… writes

appendChange previously swallowed every tail-inspection error,
so an I/O failure could let the append proceed without the
required separator and silently lose the entry to a merged
line; only ENOENT (fresh journal) is suppressed now. The
append also ignored FileHandle.write's bytesWritten, so a
partial write became a durable torn record reported as
success; the loop now writes the whole record before syncing.
Regression tests cover both paths.

Implement the pre-merge Persistence Integrity demand: appendChanges
replaces the per-entry append with one serialized (per-task) atomic
update - read current journal, repair a torn tail, write the complete
next content to a temp file, fsync it, atomically rename onto
changes.jsonl, and fsync the parent directory (POSIX; Windows cannot
open directories). A crash leaves either the old or the new complete
journal, never a half-applied multi-file update. checkpointSave now
persists the whole step's writes in that single update and propagates
journal failures instead of reporting a fully durable checkpoint with
lost entries; the change card is emitted only after the journal is
durable. Save failures keep the historical handler (logged, checkpoints
disabled, resolves undefined). Regression tests cover post-commit
failure, mid-update rename failure (all-or-nothing, temp cleanup),
concurrent-update serialization, restart recovery from a stale temp
file and torn tail, and empty updates.

Comment thread src/core/checkpoints/index.ts
…mplete journals

- checkpointSave runs the complete per-task transaction (staging +
commit + journal replacement + card) under the shared per-task lock,
so the background Task.ts save can no longer interleave with later
  per-write transactions.
- loadChanges rejects corrupt middle lines and non-entry-shaped
records; only a verified final torn tail is accepted (after
truncation), so rollback fails loudly when journal completeness is
  unknown.
- appendChanges truncates torn tails instead of preserving them.
- WriteToFileTool no longer swallows journal failures.
…ersistence

CodeRabbit follow-up wave:
- changeJournal: retry transient Windows rename rejections (EPERM/
  EBUSY/EACCES) with a short backoff instead of failing the append;
preserve a complete final record that lost only its newline instead
of truncating it; tolerate fsync-unsupported errnos on the post-rename
directory sync (the journal content is already in place) while still
  propagating genuine I/O failures.
- Write/EditFile/ApplyPatch tools: emit success results only after the
checkpoint + journal persistence succeeded, and hand off queued
messages from finally whenever the file write itself succeeded - a
journal persistence failure now surfaces as an explicit tool failure
without a success result and without stranding the message queue.
- ApplyPatchTool buffers per-file success results until the post-patch
checkpoint persists; failure results stay immediate.
ChangeCard posted untagged openFile messages, so a crafted or imported
card path like "../../.env" (normalized to "./../../.env") resolved
outside the workspace and opened without validation: the handler only
enforced containment for fromMarkdown requests.

Tag the post with values.fromChangeCard and treat it as an untrusted
source in webviewMessageHandler: same lexical + realpath containment as
markdown-sourced requests, with a single best-effort percent-decode at
the boundary (openFile decodes after its check; invalid escapes keep
their literal form, matching openFile's own fallback).

Also ports the restoreFile git-pathspec fix from the rollback-service
unit (byte-identical file).

Pre-merge checklist rows at head db99ae998: security row fixed at 9f38daf96; persistence-integrity row verified compliant (claims stale at current head).

Security (ChangeCard openFile containment): real - fixed at 9f38daf96. ChangeCard.tsx now tags the post with values: { fromChangeCard: true }, and webviewMessageHandler treats the marker as an untrusted source: the same lexical (isPathOutsideWorkspace) + realpath (isRealPathOutsideWorkspace) containment as fromMarkdown, plus a single best-effort percent-decode at the boundary (openFile decodes after its own check; invalid escapes such as 100%.txt keep their literal form, matching openFile's fallback). Regression tests in webviewMessageHandler.openFile.spec.ts: relative traversal (./../../.env), absolute outside path, percent-encoded traversal, symlink escape, legitimate % filename, in-workspace open; ChangeCard.spec.tsx asserts the marker on every openFile post. Negative controls: guard removal -> 4 reds (all asserting the new containment); decode removal -> exactly 1 red (percent traversal); marker removal -> 2 reds (payload assertions).

Persistence integrity: all four claims are already fixed at the current head.

  1. "appendChanges preserves unterminated or malformed tails" - fixed by the round-28 fragment truncation plus the round-30 repair: only a complete, entry-shaped final record is preserved (newline re-added); anything else is truncated at the last newline (isEntryShaped guard in changeJournal.ts).
  2. "loadChanges skips parse and shape errors on all lines" - this unit's loadChanges is strict since round 29: if (!isEntryShaped(parsed)) { throw ... } and corrupt mid-lines throw; rollback.ts catches and fails closed ("Change journal could not be read") instead of selecting old entries from an incomplete history.
  3. "rollback selects old entries without detecting incomplete history" - fail-closed catch since round 29 (see 2).
  4. "checkpoint queue only covers journal replacement; void this.checkpointSave(false, true); WriteToFileTool swallows" - checkpointSave acquires the full-transaction lock (withTaskLock(globalStorageDir + NUL + taskId)) since round 29, serializing commit + journal per task; WriteToFileTool awaits checkpointSave with no catch since round 29 (success message after the checkpoint block, queue handoff in finally).

…a saves

Port of the rollback-service unit's fix (convergence discipline; the
full-transaction lock wrapper is kept). The location was already
captured before the transaction for the lock key, but a save with no
location still committed and skipped the journal silently.

Fail a write-metadata save before committing when no location exists;
surface the partial state via CheckpointPartialPersistenceError if the
location is nonetheless gone after a successful commit.

Regression tests: provider loss during the commit still persists the
journal through the captured location; provider absence before a
write-metadata save fails before committing; non-write baseline saves
keep the historical behavior. Negative controls: pre-commit guard
removal -> exactly 1 red; deferring the deref to post-commit -> 3 reds
(the transaction-serialization test included), all asserting the
captured-location contract.
… of cloud capture

Two pre-merge review findings on the change-card persistence path:

- A saveCheckpoint rejection was swallowed for every call: with write
metadata the file write had already happened, so the tool reported a
success whose rollback metadata did not exist. Write-metadata saves
now propagate the failure (checkpoints still disabled); the legacy
swallow is reserved for non-write calls such as the task-start
  baseline.

- Full-detail change cards embed raw unified diffs, and task sync
captured every non-partial message, uploading the content of
secret-bearing files (.env, PII) to the cloud endpoint. change_card
messages are now excluded from cloud task-message capture in both
addToClineMessages and updateClineMessage; cards stay local to the
  webview.

Regression tests: write-metadata rejection propagates with no journal
entry and no change card; non-write failures keep the legacy swallow;
change_card says never reach CloudService.captureEvent while ordinary
says still sync. Negative controls: removing the write-metadata branch
-> exactly 1 red; removing each capture-site guard -> exactly 1 red.

🟡 Minor · Journal the source path for move rollback. · ApplyPatchTool.ts:229-271

src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts:229-271
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Journal the source path for move rollback.

When change.movePath is present, ApplyPatchTool writes the destination and deletes the source, but journals only the destination. rollbackStep restores each journaled path from the pre-step snapshot: baseHash for the first entry, or the preceding checkpoint for later entries. It does not restore an unjournaled source path.

Add a delete entry for change.path. The entry's operation does not control restoration; its path causes rollbackStep to restore the source from the snapshot where it still existed.

…card paths

- loadChanges discarded a parse failure on the final line as a torn
tail without evidence, so a corrupted final record made rollback
report an incomplete history as valid (restore-latest no-oped over
the lost write). Torn-tail repair is verified truncation owned by the
append path; a read now rejects, and rollbackFile, rollbackStep, and
restoreLatestFile surface an explicit failure without restoring.

- Change-card openFile paths were decoded once at the containment
boundary while openFile decodes again afterwards: a double-encoded
request (./%252e%252e/%252e%252e/.env) passed containment as a
literal and escaped only after that later decode. Card paths now
  decode to a fixed point at the boundary (same rule as markdown);
literal names with a bare percent keep the historical fallback and
  non-stabilizing encodings reject.

Regression tests: torn final line and entirely torn journal reject at
load; corrupt final records fail restore-latest, rollbackFile, and
rollbackStep without a restore call; a double-encoded change-card
traversal is rejected before openFile runs. Negative controls:
restoring the silent discard turns exactly the new-behavior tests red;
reverting the card path to a single decode turns exactly the
double-encode test red.
