feat(evals): shared evals package and an eval for T3 tool-use mistakes - #24635
We change T3's agent instructions and MCP tool descriptions often, and we had no way to tell if a change makes agents better or worse. Agents also repeat the same T3 tool mistakes: native subagents instead of delegate_task, sleep poll loops instead of watch_pull_request, PRs left unlinked, and similar. And the evals we had lived as one-off scripts inside apps/server, with no shared way to run or extend them.
What this adds
A top-level evals/ package (@t3tools/evals):
evals/README.md: when to write an eval, how to run one, the standard shape (entry run.ts, cases as data, --out/--model/--baseline), rules for cases (reproduce a real failure, fail before the fix, controls, no user data), and cost rules. AGENTS.md points to it.
evals/mcp-tool-use/: replays 88 small fake threads on Claude and Codex models and checks the T3 tool calls and final text. T3's text and tool schemas come from source, so two branches compare two versions of the text. A cheap model plays the shell, so nothing runs on the host.
evals/mcp-tool-use/templates/: trimmed captures of a real Claude Code and Codex turn, so the eval runs on any machine. trim-capture.ts makes new ones and removes user instructions, personal skills and agents, account ids, and home paths.
evals/thread-titles/: the existing thread title eval, moved from apps/server/scripts.
CI typechecks the package and runs the grader tests. Server changes re-check it through ci-changes.cjs. CI does not call models.
Run
# ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the repo root .envcd evals
pnpm mcp-tool-use --case review-round-uses-thread-send --samples 1 --out runs/check
pnpm mcp-tool-use --out runs/sonnet
A full Sonnet run costs about $9.

Cases passing
Samples passing
Claude Sonnet 5.5
82 of 85
96%
GPT-6.1 Sol
77 of 83
88%, mostly proxy stream errors
One Sonnet failure (preview-snapshot-timeout-retry-loop) used to pass only because the recorded user had a personal screenshot skill. With the trimmed template it shows a real gap in T3's preview text.
Created with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code. Eval runs use Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Haiku 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Astra.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR primarily adds a substantial, evaluation-only MCP harness and relocates an existing title eval, with no meaningful product-runtime behavior change. Human review is still warranted because a new script suppresses a static-analysis diagnostic and unresolved comments identify gaps in schedule-cleanup and secret-request test coverage.

Adds an evaluation package with a model-backed MCP tool-use runner, simulated tool interactions, and scenario cases. It also documents evaluation practices, updates the thread-title evaluation’s location, and exports two existing functions.
Registers the evals workspace package and documents evaluation setup, cases, and run practices. Updates the thread-title evaluation imports and documentation. Adds contributor guidance and CI test-impact configuration.
Capture trimming and request reconstruction evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/trim-capture.ts
Rebuilds Claude and Codex requests from captured templates. Trims captures, filters selected content, and checks output for specified personal-data markers.
Replays prior calls, simulates tool and shell results, dispatches model tool calls, and records sample responses and usage.
Grading, CLI runs, and reports evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts
Grades expected calls and responses, validates run options, compares baselines, runs selected cases, and writes reports and result files.
Evaluation scenarios and runner tests evals/mcp-tool-use/cases/*, evals/mcp-tool-use/run.test.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/PullRequestSyncReactor.ts
Adds orchestration, pull-request, and visual-preview cases and tests for runner behavior. Exports taskPrompt and changeRequestsCreatedBy without changing their implementations.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 5cc59
The new evals package is not run in CI and does not affect runtime behavior. Two eval cases can still pass when the model behaves badly: a one-off scheduling request, and a request to paste a secret into chat. Tighten those two cases when convenient. They are not a reason to block the merge.

Add rgb(0,0,0) black-background and rgb(255,255,255) white-text spellings to the theme check.
The listed ~background:#000 fragment already matches html,body{background:#000000;color:#ffffff}, because the check is a case-insensitive substring match. The gap is other common spellings. A page that uses rgb(0,0,0) for the background and rgb(255,255,255) for the text passes every current entry.
Add these entries to the callsMustNot array on line 4. Keep the list to exact spellings. A broader rgb(0 prefix would also reject non-black colors such as rgb(0, 128, 0).

Require an explicit cleanup plan for the recurring workaround.
schedule_task has no one-shot schedule type, so do not require an impossible one-off schedule. However, the current expectation checks only the schedule type and time. It can pass a daily or weekly recurring schedule without requiring the response to state how the task will be deleted or disabled after tomorrow’s run. Add a grading assertion for that cleanup plan.

Broaden the secret-request guard.
The textMustNot patterns allow direct requests such as Send me your API secret, Please provide your Cloudflare API token, and Share the token with me. These phrases match none of the current patterns, so the case can pass while the assistant asks the user to disclose the token in chat. Match generic request verbs and secret names, or add a positive assertion for an approved transfer method such as wrangler login or a 0600 environment file.

Update the textMustNot patterns in the secret-request test case to catch generic
requests for API tokens or secrets, including “send me,” “provide,” and “share”
phrasing; verify the cited example requests are rejected without matching safe

Reject links to the background PR.
This case passes if the agent links PR #124 and calls watch_pull_request for background PR #123. Watching also links a PR, but maxCalls.link_pull_request does not count watch calls. Add a callsMustNot expectation for link_pull_request|watch_pull_request with url: "~/pull/123". As per coding guidelines, “Test meaningful logic or observable behavior.”

Runs small fake threads against Claude Sonnet 5.5 to see how agents use
T3 Code's MCP tools. A captured Claude Code request gives the real system
prompt, reminders, and native tools. T3 instructions and tool schemas are
built from the checked-out source, so two branches can be compared.
Includes five commit-safe example cases, a grader for every expect key,
ToolSearch emulation for deferred T3 tools, --dry-run, and --baseline.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…MCP eval
Add callsMustNot, minCalls, numeric <=N / >=N arg checks, and
target.options array normalization to the grader. Text checks are now
case-sensitive, as the cases are written.
Delegated child cases build their prompt with T3's own taskPrompt,
using the new setup.delegateRole, so a rewrite of that text is measured.
Drop the CLAUDE.md reminder by default, so T3's text must work for
every user. Remove --t3-tools inline, --kind, plain-request templates,
and the hand-registered schema path, and simplify the default mocks.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The eval's shell returned empty output for every command, so Sonnet
decided its tools were broken and refused the work the cases test.
Cases now describe a small fake world (branch, commits, diff, files,
PRs, web pages). Bash, Read, Write, Edit, and WebFetch answer from it:
git, gh, and common read commands work on compound commands, pipes,
heredocs, and redirects, without running anything on the host. Shell
mocks still win per command part. T3 defaults echo their inputs
(task ids, PR identity, linked PRs), a delegated child's watch gets
T3's real error, and the gitStatus reminder comes from the world.
Also: mocks apply to native tools, prior tool calls replay one per
step, the system prompt is cached across samples, --case takes a list,
max steps is 10, and results keep each sample's transcript.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The hand-written fake repo was 1,116 lines and still missed commands
agents ran. A small model now plays the machine instead: for each shell,
Read, Edit, Write, or WebFetch call that no shell mock answers, Haiku 5.5
at low effort gets the case's world, the sample's earlier calls and
outputs, and the new call, and returns only the output in a JSON field.
Nothing runs on the host. Shell mocks still win on simple commands, and
a delegated child's watch_pull_request still gets T3's refusal.
Runs are cheaper: a sample stops once a must-not check has failed,
--max-steps defaults to 6 with per-case maxSteps, and each case gets 2
samples plus a 3rd only when they disagree (--samples N still fixes the
count). The summary reports cost per sample and simulator cost.
The commit-safe cases now live in scripts/mcp-tool-use-cases/*.jsonl
without their source fields and load by default. --cases still loads
private files. The example cases file is gone.

API keys can be billed differently for requests that open with Claude
Code's identity line. The eval replaces every copy of it with a neutral
line and notes that in the summary. The rest of the captured prompt is
unchanged.

The simulated shell made up PR numbers, so cases that check the new PR's
URL failed even when the agent linked it. Pin gh pr create where a case
checks the number, and give the two long PR flows more steps.

…ext size
--stop-on-regression runs cases that passed in the baseline first and stops
at the first one that now fails, so a copy change that breaks a passing case
fails fast. Each case now runs as a unit (2 samples, a 3rd on a split).
--context prints the size of T3's system text and tool schemas, and every
summary includes it.

Evals were scripts inside apps/server with no shared guide, so each new eval
invented its own layout and run steps. Both evals (MCP tool use and thread
titles) now live in evals/, with a guide for running and adding evals, a
README per eval, and a script that trims new harness captures. The Codex
template also drops spawn_agent's model details, and the runner uses
Effect.ignore, which fixes CI typecheck.

t3dotgg
changed the title
feat(server): eval that reproduces real T3 tool-use mistakes
feat(evals): shared evals package and an eval for T3 tool-use mistakes
Oct 26, 2026
- Codex code cells answer tool calls they do not await, so those calls are graded.
- Replayed orchestrator_capabilities results name the model under test.
- --concurrency bounds samples in flight, not cases.
- Codex templates keep only harness messages and tools.
- Prior PR calls by repository and number get a real URL.
- The commit label is read before the paid runs and cannot lose results.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
…tachments
- Claude Code rejects a deferred tool that was not loaded, so that call never
ran. The grader no longer records it. Mocked tool errors still count.
- trim-capture keeps only text blocks of the first user turn, so user images
and documents never reach a template.

- Line 4: Update the `provider-unavailable-cli-fallback` case’s `command -v
codex` shell mock output to use `/home/user/.local/share/codex/bin/codex`
instead of the personal `/Users/dev` path, preserving the mock’s indication that
the CLI exists outside T3’s provider path.

* chore(task-cache): name native client downloads so agent-device can install them by URL
agent-device install-from-source picks the archive type from the download's
filename, and the cache URL has no extension. Device pool workers can now

it through the gateway.

* feat(mobile): run the chrome e2e across poses on the device pool
`vp run mobile:e2e` now leases iOS and Android devices from the Simlock pool
(SIMLOCK_AGENT_DEVICE_URL + AGENT_DEVICE_DAEMON_AUTH_TOKEN) instead of booting
local simulators, and walks each of 12 poses (phone sizes, iPads, a fold,
a tablet, dark mode, largest text) through the app: thread list, a thread,
scrolling, typing, back, settings, then rotation or folding.
Every screen gets generic layout checks that need no per-screen code: app in
front, no error screen or launch dialog, no fixed control cut off by the
screen edge, no sibling controls stacked, nothing under a system bar, no
input under the keyboard. Transitions keep the video check for tabs lagging
the screen, now measured against the recording's own first and last frames.
Afterwards a headless Claude reviews each pose's screenshots for what the
checks cannot see, and the findings land in the same report grid.
`mobile:install --session` now has the session's host download the dev
client from the shared cache with the read-only key, instead of uploading it
through the gateway (13 s instead of 10+ minutes for an APK).

* chore(mobile): e2e poses for current devices, Duo and landscape fixes
Poses now cover iPhone SE, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo folded and unfolded,
iPad Pro 13" in both orientations, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro Fold folded,
unfolded and unfolded landscape, and Pixel Tablet in both orientations.
Landscape poses rotate once the app is up (a rotation during launch is lost)
and check that the screen really is wider than tall. Taps fall back to the
element's centre when agent-device refuses a covered ref, and a gateway
whose workers briefly reconnect is retried.

* fix(mobile): select the correct draft after adding a project (pingdotgg#24269)
* fix(mobile): mobile:install no longer requires --prepare
The --prepare flag from pingdotgg#25390 had no default, so effect/cli made it
required and every mobile:install failed with "Missing required flag".
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(mobile): e2e landscape poses rotate for real on tablets and folds
agent-device names rotations relative to the device's natural orientation,
which is landscape on the Pixel Tablet and an unfolded Fold, so
"landscape-left" turned them portrait. The runner now asks for a shape and
tries each rotation until the screen has it. It also prepares each platform's
dev client before leasing, rides out longer worker drops, and skips the
Duo poses by default until agent-device can fold Simlock's simulators.

* refactor(client): composers share one workspace snapshot refresh per provider and cwd (pingdotgg#25370)
Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* refactor(mobile): composer pastes and picks are cancelled by their draft, not by the composer (pingdotgg#25376)
Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(mobile): mobile:install no longer requires --prepare

* fix(build): TEMPORARY workaround so linux-arm64 builds run on 16/64 KiB page kernels (pingdotgg#25825)
TEMPORARY workaround for an upstream Node bug: nodejs/node#67048
Node 26.9+ --build-sea writes linux-arm64 executables that 16/64 KiB page kernels cannot load.
linux-arm64 now injects with postject, and the archive build rejects incompatible ELF layouts.
One-time exception. Revert once Node ships a fix: grep for the Node issue URL and drop postject
from scripts/package.json.

* feat(mobile): mobile:install --session installs into an agent-device session
For devices opened elsewhere (a device pool, cloud, or remote host), install
the cached dev client for this checkout's fingerprint through the caller's
agent-device session, from the caller's workspace (agent-device scopes
session ownership to it). It never builds; without a shared build it names
the next step. --abi picks the Android build, --metro opens it.

* fix(server): make document attachments readable to agents (pingdotgg#21458)
* fix(mobile): native client fingerprints match across macOS and Linux
Generated android/ios projects and the Expo config's extra section (env-
specific values a dev client reads from Metro) changed the hash per machine,
so a Linux VM never found a Mac's build in the shared cache.

* chore(task-cache): name native client downloads so agent-device can install them by URL
agent-device install-from-source picks the archive type from the download's

it through the gateway.

* fix(mobile): mobile:install no longer requires --prepare

required and every mobile:install failed with "Missing required flag".

* fix(board): migration 031 boots a fresh database after upstream drops projection_state
Upstream v0.1.3's migration 063 drops main.projection_state, so board
migration 031's watermark carry-over failed on any new install. Skip the
carry-over when the table is gone. Also port the deleted MCP registration
test into a board-owned test.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* docs(t3o): record the v0.1.3 sync; board copy names upstream's renamed settings pages
seams.md gains the v0.1.3 sync notes and its inventory, workflow and debt
tables are brought up to date. Settings → Connections is now Settings →
Environments upstream, and authorized clients moved to Sharing & access,
so the board's worker copy and guide say so.

* docs(t3o): retire the desktop menu test's inventory row (deleted upstream)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* test(board): background-wait tests follow upstream's awaited-monitor rule
Upstream pingdotgg#24610 holds a monitor only when the agent waits on it; the
board's thread state delegates to that rule, so its tests mark the
monitor awaited and cover the unawaited case.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* test(board): two board tests track upstream's bare-repo guard and sweep timing
Upstream's VcsProcess sets safe.bareRepository=explicit, so reading the
bare test remote needs --git-dir. The draft-merge test advanced the clock
to exactly the rung's end, between two sweep ticks; it now waits one tick
past it, which is what the behaviour promises.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* docs(t3o): v0.1.3 merge log entry
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* test(board): draft-merge retry tests advance to the first sweep tick past the rung
The click-at-0 test needs only RUNG_ONE; the click-at-20s test needs the
tick at 4m30s, ten seconds past RUNG_ONE from the click, across the whole
±60s jitter envelope.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(board): worker copy names upstream's Environments and Sharing & access pages
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(board): two merge leftovers caught by typecheck and lint
boardThreadState.test.ts follows upstream's awaited?: true schema, and
boardWorkspace.ts drops a no-control-regex disable the rule no longer needs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(board): repo-root test runs and board test hygiene after the v0.1.3 sync
The fork's root maxWorkers cap clashed with upstream's new root test.projects
list, so it now applies only to per-package runs. The board lint deferral no
longer switches off the wall-clock and real-time-wait test rules; the eight
board test sites that tripped them use fixed epochs or the router's load promise.

We change T3's agent instructions and MCP tool descriptions often, and we had no way to tell if a change makes agents better or worse. Agents also repeat the same T3 tool mistakes: native subagents instead of
delegate_task,sleeppoll loops instead ofwatch_pull_request, PRs left unlinked, and similar. And the evals we had lived as one-off scripts insideapps/server, with no shared way to run or extend them. What this adds
A top-level
evals/package (@t3tools/evals):evals/README.md: when to write an eval, how to run one, the standard shape (entryrun.ts, cases as data,--out/--model/--baseline), rules for cases (reproduce a real failure, fail before the fix, controls, no user data), and cost rules. AGENTS.md points to it.evals/mcp-tool-use/: replays 88 small fake threads on Claude and Codex models and checks the T3 tool calls and final text. T3's text and tool schemas come from source, so two branches compare two versions of the text. A cheap model plays the shell, so nothing runs on the host.evals/mcp-tool-use/templates/: trimmed captures of a real Claude Code and Codex turn, so the eval runs on any machine.trim-capture.tsmakes new ones and removes user instructions, personal skills and agents, account ids, and home paths.evals/thread-titles/: the existing thread title eval, moved fromapps/server/scripts.CI typechecks the package and runs the grader tests. Server changes re-check it through
ci-changes.cjs. CI does not call models.Run
A full Sonnet run costs about $9.
